As we all saw, while passing the coast yesterday, a ship of seventy or eighty oars, though we don’t know where it is from, was trying to fight against a middle-sized boat that was getting close to them, they were moving back and forth from the starboard to the larboard. They did not have enough ballast and they had too many people on board and had miscalculated the capacity. The ship keeled over and did not recover so everybody ended up dying a dog’s death. They were those samurai from the eastern provinces and did not know much about how to sail, so they all died for nothing. If it were the western samurai, they would balance the ship by dividing the troops into groups on both sides, so while those on one side were taking a nap, those on the other side would fight in defence, thus keeping the boat in balance. So those from the east, while knowing well how to ride a horse, do not know how to sail a boat, it is like an angler fish climbing up a tree. That is why I say you should not slander the Kamigata people so much.

When you have used up everything in your satchel, draw the cleaning rod from the waist, replace it with the musket and hen draw your sword, cutting the enemy by aiming at his hand or leg. If you hit the front of the enemy helmet rashly, a blunt sword will bend into a shape like that of the handle of a pot.

...

After that, draw anything you like, such as your sword or your Wakizashi short sword, and try to cut the hand or leg of the enemy. Never try to hit the front of the helmet with your weapon; if it is poor in quality, then it will have the edge nicked and it will not function anymore.

...

Because of the above, you will have to handle your Wakizashi short sword with one hand, but you cannot cut through armour with one hand and also the blade will break

...

Thinking I might be struck in turn if I attacked him from the left side, I came at him from his right side, taking a grip of the spear shaft and aiming at the edge on the crupper; I did this judging where it was best to strike, where it would not hit the horse’s bones.

Abercromby was recalled and command passed to Amherst in September 1758. Although Amherst formed light infantry and took measures to adapt his regulars to irregular warfare he appears to have taken no steps to alter the drill that the regulars would use against the French regulars they would meet at Louisbourg, other than to order that they should load their muskets with two balls

...

One battalion, the Louisbourg Grenadiers, are recorded to have waited until the range was less than twenty yards. Wolfe had ordered that the muskets should be loaded with two balls

...

The French attack was met at a range of less than forty yards with the fire of approximately 1700 muskets, each loaded with two balls and wielded by soldiers who were arguably better shots than any British soldiers before.

If your opponent, against all probability, should stand firm and allow you to come very near him without firing himself, then you give the first volley, and take good care that your men always load two bullets to a round. I have owed, more than once, success to the use of the two bullets. In the heat of action I might forget to order it, but you will think of it; I attach great importance to this. With that cool determination, and with this fire of two bullets to the round, you will seldom have to fire a second volley, whether in attacking a position or in repelling a body of troops charging you.

...

This example has also for its object to make you appreciate the true principles of fighting when defending a position, viz., always to attack, yourself, at the last decisive moment; but here, as much as when you are attacking, there is another extremely effective means to determine the victory, and that is, to avoid, as much as ever possible, parallel fighting, which equalises advantages in a certain manner, and cannot be decided in our favour except by moral superiority, and our better-fed fire of two bullets to each round

"The following lines are translated from the instructions which the then Colonel Bugeaud, of the 56th French regiment, wrote down for his officers".

1.thumb.jpg.7e8b01b4befff4cd623b5b3fed15

Rather than attempt to discuss the countless skirmishes and pitched battles of the Onin War, let me instead describe the new kind of fighter, the ashigaru or “lightfoot”, who emerged at this time and became one of the war’s principal scourges. The ashigaru were in part the successors to the akuto , the “evil bands”Akuto , it will be recalled, was a term broadly applied by the Ashikaga Shogunate and other authorities to armed groups whom they regarded as outlaws, groups that included mounted warriors as well as foot soldiers. Ashigaru, on the other hand, were exclusively fighters on foot, as their name implies; and inasmuch as they were employed by both the eastern and western armies during the Onin War, they could not so readily be labelled outlaws. What they inherited from the akut was their rampaging fighting style, and in this regard they were considered by many in Kyoto—for example, members of the effete courtier class - not only as outlaws but also as subhuman and a threat to civilization itself. Eventually, during later Sengoku times, ashigaru became a respectable term, applied to members of the trained infantry units that warrior commanders developed. But during the Onin War the ashigaru were the perpetrators of many, if not most, of the worst horrors of that devastating conflict.

Various groups of marauders, called akuto, whether of peasant or warrior origins, upset the peace and undermined the bakufu's original stabilizing aim.

According to records from Harima Province and to the chronicle "Mineaiki," the akuto at the turn of the century - whether pirates, mountain bandits, or robbers - were spreading rapidly. They wore outrageous clothing and were equipped with pitiful-looking swords or long bamboo poles, and they also congregated into small groups, gambled regularly, and were talented petty thieves.

In the latter part of the 1330s, previously small and unimpressive akuto elements began to appear in large groups of fifty to one hundred, magnificently outfitted men all riding splendid horses.

Toyoda Takeshi, in his treatment of the forces that undid the Hojo regency, began with the so-called akuto (evil band) phenomenon. The term evil band was applied to various types of illegal activities, but the most significant, from the point of view of this analysis, was the work of purposefully organized groups of local warriors who resorted to violence in disputes, usually over land rights.

The document A is a record of the military services assessed in 1613-1614 on the various shi-ryo and to-zho in the barony, in connection with the first besieging campaign at Osaka castle of Toyo- tomi Hideyori, which was waged by Tokugawa Ieyasu toward the end of the latter year. The shi-ryo are mentioned by the names of their lords, and the to-zho by those of their locations fol- lowed by the word shu(group or company). When a lord was also the ji-to of one or more to-zho, services demanded of men of the latter are sometimes, though not always, stated directly after his own.

"War-horses" - Zho-me, literally, horse for mounting; really meaning a knight.

kokushitsu shibogawa-zutsumi-saya aikawa-maki-tsuka tachi-koshirae (黒漆皺革包鞘藍革巻柄太刀拵), tokubetsu-jūyō-tōsōgu

This is a long ō-dachi koshirae with hilt and upper third of the saya wrapped with leather which dates not later than Nanbokuchō. Conspicious is the very long hilt and that the saya doesn´t have any ashi hangers by which it would be worn at the belt. Such an interpretation is called naga-dachi (長太刀, lit. “long tachi”) or also mochi-tachi (持太刀, lit. “carried tachi”) as it was carried by a servant until it came into use.

At a distance of thirty chō from Kiyosu, in the nearby hamlet of Orizu, stood a temple of the Sōtō Zen sect called Shōgenji. The site was ideal for a fortress, and rumors abounded that the lord of Iwakura in the upper four districts was about to turn it into a forward stronghold. Accordingly, Nobunaga sent troops to round up the townspeople of Kiyosu and have them clear the bamboo grove at the Shōgenji. When the townspeople made a count of Nobunaga’s soldiers, the number of mounted samurai turned out to be no more than eighty-three.

The enemy sent a force of about three thousand men, who deployed in Tanbarano. As they did so, Nobunaga rode about trying to build a defense and patched together some semblance of a rear echelon with townsmen whom he made carry bamboo spears. The light infantry, positioned up front, were in decent enough shape. As it turned out, both sides withdrew their forces.

As he was sitting down on a stool inside his camp on the grounds of the Ushiya temple, which adjoined Ōgaki in western Mino, the archers within the beleaguered castle let loose an ugly volley at random onto the siege lines, using arrows fitted with bamboo heads, and Kageyama Kamon no Suke was hit in his left eye.

On the 23rd of the Ninth Month Nobunaga withdrew from Noda and Fukushima. He put Wata Iga no Kami and Shibata Shuri no Suke in command of his rear guard and took the route leading from Nakajima by way of the Eguchi Crossing. This Eguchi River, the combined flow of the Yodo and Uji rivers, was a huge stream with roaring rapids, altogether a frightening sight. Since days of old, one always had to cross it by ferry. As Nobunaga’s fierce troops advanced on the crossing, however, local insurgents contrived to hide the ferryboats so that free passage would be impossible. Camouflaged with rice plants, hemp, bamboo, or reeds, the greater half of them bearing bamboo spears, the insurgents deployed on the other side of the Eguchi River as far as the Ozaka Embankment and yelled wildly, but that posed no problem.

The great strength of the Takeda army was its cavalry, which operated as mounted units supported by personal attendants. The total for all the horsemen in the Takeda army in the Koyo Gunkan list is 9,121, and every horseman would have been accompanied by two followers on foot. Takeda Shingen had a personal retinue of 884 ashigaru and servants, who made up the hatamoto-shoyakunin, to whom were added various notable samurai as bodyguard. There were in addition 5,489 other ashigaru under the command of the other leaders, including the ashigaru-taishō's own command. These figures would give a full Takeda army of 33,736:

Horsemen - 9,121
Two followers each - 18,242
Ashigaru in the hatamoto-shoyakunin - 884
Other ashigaru - 5,489
Total - 33,736

At the height of its powers the Takeda army consisted of 30,000 men of whom 3,000 were horsemen. The number actually mobilised on a battlefield may have differed from time to time, but the proportion of horsemen to foot would be about the same.

In contemporary writings three ways of carrying out a cavalry attack were identified:

Norikomi
In a situation where the enemy have advanced close to one's own lines, a small number of horsemen are sent out as scouts.
They ride into the enemy lines, cause a disturbance and withdraw as a 'reconnaissance in force'.

Norikiri
In the middle of a battle when the enemy lines have been broken, a section of five to 10 horsemen ride in suddenly to attack an enemy who have wavered, throwing them into confusion.

Norikuzushi
The horsemen and infantry on foot charge into the ranks of missile troops, breaking them in one go and overrunning them.

A month later Maro and his  deputies  arrived at  Taga  Stockade  leading  a special  force of one thousand horsemen mobilized from Hitachi, Kazusa, Shimosa, Musashi, Kozuke, and Shimotsuke.

On the first  day  of the third month he  departed Shikima with his 196 horsemen, 249 allied emishi troops, and 5,499 infantrymen from the Mutsu  provincial regiments and frontier garrison, bound for Omuro post station in Dewa, arriving the same  day. There he linked up with Dewa Governor Tanabe no Naniwa, who led an additional 500 provincial regimental soldiers and 140 allied emishi troops.

Along  the river and overland routes there are  12,440 persons  who can transport light  and  heavy goods. They  can  carry 6,215  koku of dried rice at a time. The  pacification army  numbers  27,470  men. In one  day they  consume 549 koku. If one calculates on the basis of  this,  the  provisions  transported  at one time can  only support  the  army for 11 days.

In the fifth month of  789, 2,000-man  detachments from the Middle and Rear Armies crossed the river and attacked the home of emishi leader Taibo no  Aterui,  where  they  encountered resistance from 300 emishi warriors. After a short  clash,  the emishi withdrew and the court armies advanced, burning  some 800 emishi homes in 14  villages  and skirmishing with retreating  emishi  fighters as they moved. The  plan  was to link  up  with the Forward  Army  at a  place  called Subuse  Village  to continue the advance. In the  event,  the Forward  Army  never  arrived; instead,  the emishi counter-attacked with a  vengeance, driving  the  government troops  back across the river. On the  imperial side,  5  important  officers and 25 other  troops  were killed and 245 others wounded in the  fighting. Worse yet, 1,036  men drowned  trying  to flee across the  river,  while another  1,250  made it  across, but  only by throwing  aside their weapons  and armor.

Tactically,  the  imperial  armies were  predominantly light infantry  that fought  with bow and arrow from behind  portable standing wooden shields. These bowmen were  augmented by  other footsoldiers  bearing spears, by bow-wielding light cavalry,  and  by  a somewhat  mysterious  form of artillery piece  called an  oyumi  or  do,  which  appears  to have been some sort of  platform-mounted, crossbow-style catapult,  on the order of the Greek gastraphetes  and similar devices, perhaps capable  of  launching volleys of bolts or stones in a  single firing. An  army  of this sort is formidable in  pitched battles, particularly  on the defensive. But it is  logistically  illsuited to  long  offensive  campaigns  because of its size and because it draws as its  manpower  the same farmers who  produce  its food and other supplies.

While the  imperial  armies were mixed forces  (in  terms of  weapons systems) numbering  in the thousands or even tens of  thousands, the emishi fought  almost  exclusively  as  light cavalry  and seldom in  groups  of more than a few hundred.  They  are  reputed  to have been masters of this style of warfare-fiercely courageous  and  extraordinarily  skillful mounted archers.
