A Critique by Any Other Name: Imagawa Ryōshun’s Nan Taiheiki, an Introduction and Translation (Part 1)

Ryoshun begins by explaining the importance of history, writing, “We barely know about the world of our fathers and even less about two or three generations prior. My descendants thus run the risk of becoming lowly people like those subjects without name or rank. For this reason, I will record the few things I know”; he also claims that he will record “only those things that can be verified or that I have personally seen.” At the heart of his motivation to write Nan Taiheiki, then, was fear for his family’s survival. In other words, we might say Ryoshun was trying to write an alternate history that prioritized his family. This required him to establish his credibility as an historian, for only by establishing this position could he attack Taiheiki’s deficiencies and criticize Yoshimitsu’s despotism.

Warrior understanding of history was primarily based on the role individuals and families played in political and military events. Indeed, Ryoshun himself places more importance on Taiheiki as a repository of warrior deeds than on the main storyline. The sheer number of Taiheiki variants both attests to the desire of warrior families to be included in the text, and also reflects the importance they placed on their participation in major events and the role that fame played in family survival. Ryoshun’s failure to have Taiheiki amended to reflect the role of his family was one factor motivating him to write Nan Taiheiki.

It comes as no surprise that Taiheiki has over 100 variants. Many powerful families, including but not limited to the Maeda, Imagawa, Hosokawa, Sasaki, and the Hojo, possessed copies of the text, which either originally or subsequently prioritized their roles in the events.

The chronicles of the Gempei War of 1180-85 give absurdly exaggerated accounts of the size of the armies engaged. The  Heike Monogatari is a romance in which accuracy was not the writers’ aim, but the  Azuma Kagami has some claim to be treated as a historical document, since it was based in part upon official records. Yet, to take a simple instance, both works give impossible numbers for the armies commanded by the Minamoto generals Yoshitsune and Noriyori when they were commissioned to destroy Yoshinaka at the end of 1183. The figures in both works are of the order of 50,000 for Noriyori and 20,000 for Yoshitsune. To supply, bivouac, and move such numbers would have been a colossal task in twelfth-century Japan, even in favourable conditions of topography and climate, the more so because at that time most of the fighting men were mounted. In modem times a force of 1,000 mounted men is about half a cavalry brigade, which in quarter column would extend half a mile. It is obvious that a force of ten or twenty thousand mounted men could not perform the feats attributed to Yoshitsune s force, such as riding fast over thirty miles or so of rough, hilly country and fighting a stiff action at the end of the day. There is no doubt that the strength of a force reported as 10,000 was frequently not more than 1,000 or 1,500.*

There is an interesting confirmation of this ratio in  Gyokuyd, the diary of Kanezane, the Fujiwara Regent during part of the Gempei War. He notes that one of his servants counted a Taira force as it passed through the city, and found that it numbered just over 1,000 men, although it had been publicly stated to number from 7,000 to 10,000. It was proceeding to assist Yoshinaka. This passage in Gyokuyd is pointed out by Major Hayashibe, co-author of a work on military history discussed below. He thinks that 3,000 would be a likely figure for the combined force of Yoshitsune and Noriyori.

There are numerous texts of this chronicle, nine of which are collated in an excellent work entitled  Sanko Taiheiki. A study of the numbers of men engaged in the important battles reveals most surprising discrepancies. In the usually accepted text ( rufubon ), the number engaged in the Hojo army’s attack on Kusunoki’s stronghold at Akasaka in 1333 is given at 300,000, whereas other texts have 200,000 and 20,000. The first two figures are absurd, the third may be correct for later fighting in this vicinity the numbers given vary from 100,000 to 10,000. The size of Takauji’s army leaving Shinomura is given as 20,000 in the standard text, and its strength on reaching Kyoto is given as 50,000, with 5,000 and 20,000 as variants. It is obvious from examples of this land that the chroniclers had very little idea of the size of armies, and that they did not distinguish between  sen for 1,000 and  man for 10,000. Thus, of the important battle of Kotesashi-Sekido (1333) one text says that the fighting opened with a volley of 3,000 arrows, another says 300.

William Wayne Farris. Ancient Japan's Korean Connection // Korean Studies , Vol. 20 (1996), pp. 1-22

In contrast to the heated disagreement over cuirasses, all scholars concur that equestrian gear and riding skills entered the archipelago from southern Korea. It is uncertain just how the technology entered Japan, and it is difficult to construct a firm chronology because of the sparse finds to date in South Korea. However, many South Korean archaeologists agree with their Japanese counterparts that the evidence on both sides of the Korean Straits fails to fit Egami's horserider theory.

The first Koreans to use the horse in combat were soldiers of the northern kingdom of Koguryô, Korea's earliest state, which battled with the Xianbei who occupied northern China. Wall paintings from tombs and other artifacts indicate that commanders of Koguryô's army preferred to armor both rider and horse. Heavily armored cavalry was the most deadly military technology in the world before the advent of gunpowder, because it combined mobility with invulnerability. Most Japanese scholars, as well as many South Korean archaeologists, believe that Wa, Kaya, Paekche, and Shilla footsoldiers first encountered this terrible new weapon during the war fought against Koguryô in southern Korea in a.d. 390-410, which is described in the inscription on the stele near the Yalu River.

Interpretation of the southern Korean artifacts is still open to question, but most scholars acknowledge that horse gear was not placed in tombs until the end of the fourth or beginning of the fifth century. The presence in excavations in all three kingdoms of wood and iron stirrups, a technology that dated from around a.d. 400, would seem to support this view. One South Korean archaeologist has argued that Koguryô mounted troops introduced the simple bridle and wooden-centered iron-covered stirrups to Shilla and Kaya about a.d. 410. This authority further asserts that there is a strong affinity between Kaya, Shilla, and Wa horse trappings, with many of the typologies used in Japan also applicable to the equipment of southern Korea.

Although at least one prominent Japanese archaeologist believes that horse paraphernalia entered the archipelago as early as the late fourth century from the peninsula, most regard this technology as appearing upon the Japanese scene in the first half of the fifth century, perhaps during the era 425-450. The earliest examples were simple, two-piece bits and stirrups of iron and wood that were recovered in northern Kyushu, a sure sign of Korean import. Along with a few saddle parts, these primitive trappings were the predominant type during the first half of the fifth century, and many were probably peninsular products. From a.d. 450, about the time that horse-raising commenced in Japan, artisans there began to produce simple gear.

Japanese archaeologists have traced the dispersal of horse trappings. Only one percent of tombs constructed before 425 yielded these artifacts, almost all in the Kinai; only ten percent of tumuli constructed before 500 contained horse-related artifacts. These facts suggest the gradual spread of horse gear and riding skills throughout Japan over the fifth and sixth centuries, not a sudden explosion. Horse trappings appeared too late to have been associated with an invasion in the mid or late fourth century; moreover their spread across Japan was too gradual.

Thomas Conlan. The Nature of Warfare in Fourteenth-Century Japan: The Record of Nomoto Tomoyuki // The Journal of Japanese Studies. Vol. 25, No. 2 (Summer, 1999), pp. 299-330

Among  the thousands of  petitions  that survive, one submitted on behalf of Nomoto  Tomoyuki  stands out as being uniquely  suited for  reconstructing the  experience  of  fourteenth-century  war for several  reasons. The first is its  length. Although  most  petitions chronicle only  a few military encounters, this document summarizes numerous  petitions  and  reports  of arrival written from 1335 through  1337 and is thus ideally suited for  illuminating  the  epochal onset of war. The second is its  reliability.  This document dates from 1338 and its contents can be  independently  verified. The third is  Tomoyuki's anonymity.  This  petition represents  a  plea  for rewards that  largely went unheeded.  By understanding  how the Nomoto  began  their descent into obscurity,  one can surmise how warfare altered the structure of state and  society.

Attention

Tsurujimaru, the son of Nomoto Noto Shiro Tomoyuki, now dead, states [his father's] military service.

The aforementioned Tomoyuki is a descendant of this  [the Kumagai?] house. Since he started serving the  shogun [Ashikaga Takauji], he has  performed  unparalleled military service, abandoning his lands and  fighting with little concern for  personal safety.  There is no hiding  his valor. Nevertheless, Tomoyuki was unable to submit  [a complete  record  of]  his deeds [while alive]. They  are now  humbly presented.

On the  eighth day  of the twelfth month of 1335, when the  shogun [Ashikaga Takauji] set forth from Kamakura,  Tomoyuki  was with him. On the eleventh of the same month, at the Battle of Aizawahara  in Izu, [Tomoyuki] galloped to the fore and  performed  the service of  fighting in the vanguard. The particulars were witnessed by Uesugi Hyogo Nyfido and the administrator [samurai dokoro], Miura Inaba-no-kam

On the same  day,  the battle of Nakayama [erupted].  The  enemy  was  strong to the fore so  [Tomoyuki's men] retreated a bit. Tomoyuki's  retainers  [wakato] Iwase Hikotaro Nobutsune, Matagoro Mitsuie,  Matataro  Tanetsune, and  Magogoro Ietsuna, some ten horsemen in  all, charged  into the forces of Officer  [hangan] Yuiki and cut down one  enemy  rider. [Nobutsune et al.] were about to take the head, but the general  of the  day, Yamana Izu-no-kami (Tokiuji), witnessed his deeds and  penned  a document of  praise [kanjo]. Following this order [not to take the head, Nobutsune, Mitsuie, Tanetsune, and letsuna] pursued  the  fleeing enemy  to the Hire River. The particulars appear on the document of arrival  [chakutojo]  dated the following day

The  overriding purpose  of  taking  a head was to  "prove"  one's battle service and thus the act was the metaphoric apogee of good fortune: "those who took an  enemy's head . . . sallied forth from the  castle; those who lost their lords  retreated, crying,  into the castle." Heads were  rigorously inspected because they constituted the most tangible proof of battle service. The heads of those killed would be carefully cleaned and dressed, and names attached to those who could be  identified, while those determined to be from  low-ranking men would be discarded. Recognition was a crucial concern: an unidentified head was "no different from  taking  the head of a  dog  or bird."

On the twelfth  day  of the same  month, during  the battle of Sano kawara ...  [Tomoyuki  et  al.] joined the main  body  of  troops [nakate],  crossed the river, and performed military service. On the  thirteenth, during the battle at the Izu kokufu, [Tomoyuki's]  follower  [chugen] Heigoro-otoko was killed

Heigoro  was a member of the base orders  (genin)  who followed Nomoto Tomoyuki  into battle. He lacked a surname and was referred to as otoko (onoko), a disrespectful epithet  reserved for those of lower orders or those deserving  scorn.  Although  one can assert with some confidence that Heigoro did not ride a horse,  it is not clear whether he was a foot soldier or a laborer  accidently killed in the  fray. Speed  was of the essence and so little time was  spared  to minister to the wounded or to  bury  the dead.

On the third  day of the first month of  1336, Tomoyuki's  retainer Iwase Hikotar Nobutsune led the vanguard's  attack of  Ikisumiya [castle]  in Omi [Province]. As he cut his  way through  the castle walls of the southeast corner,  Nobutsune had an arrow pass through his left and  right  cheeks. This was seen by the  general Hyobu taiyu [Niki Yoriaki] and Yamana Izu-no-kami. Nobutsune even received a commendation  [kanjo] [from  these  men]. In  addition,  the retainer  Maruyama Hikojiro  Tametoki and Katakiri Goro Nariyoshi were wounded. The  following day  all arrived at  Noji  station.

Takauji's army hardly paused  on its advance to the  capital  and arrived near the outskirts after two and a half weeks.  Speed  was essential in such circumstances,  for the  longer  an  army  remained on the road,  the  greater  the burden for its warriors  and, ultimately,  the less  likely  its success in battle. Ashikaga Takauji  mastered the quick march, covering  the distance between Kyoto and Kamakura in a mere 17 daysOther warriors, covering a similar distance, might require as long as 25 days, while a beleaguered army required over two months

After kicking [fumiotoshi]  the middle bridge's girders  into the river, Iwase Matataro Tanetsune was wounded. During  the battle on the  twenty-seventh, Tomoyuki's  retainers [wakato] Nobutsune, Mitsuie, Tanetsune, Ietsuna, and Takada Yasabur  Mitsuyuki again galloped  to the fore. To the west of the middle reaches of the Kamo River, they captured three Kurama priests  alive. Their deeds were witnessed on the battlefield by the administrator [samurai dokoro] Sasaki Bitchfi-no-kami.

On the battle of the  thirtieth,  in front of the west  gate  of  Hjiiji, Tomoyuki's man  [roto] Sugimoto  Yoichi Yoshihiro grappled with Seki Magogoro, a houseman [kenin] of Ota hangan, and took his head. This was seen [and inspected] by Sasaki Bitchu-no-kami, the battle administrator

On the first  day  of the second  month, Tomoyuki  traveled  together  with the  shogun  from Shinomura in Tanba to  Hyogo  Island in Harima.  During that battle of  Nishinomiya  in Settsu  [Province], [Tomoyuki] served under the command of Sama-no-kami  [Ashikaga Tadayoshi].  When  [Tadayoshi] ascended the mountain, [Tomoyuki] performed military  service. The  particulars were witnessed  by Otaka  Iyo-no-kami. On the  eleventh,  at the battle of the  Tejima  riverbed in  Settsu, just as [Tomoyuki] encamped  at the river's edge, [Ashikaga Takauji] suddenly returned to Hyogo. That  night [Tomoyuki  and his men were] summoned and followed.

On the  twelfth,  Sama-no-kami  (Tadayoshi) departed  from Mana castle at Hyogo. Tomoyuki  was about to follow with  him,  but then saw a notice that said that all had been killed.  [Tomoyuki]  believed  this; and then  suddenly under the cover of  darkness,  the [Ashikaga]  boats  departed; Tomoyuki  did not know of this. Not  being  able to follow  [the Ashikaga  in  battle,  Tomoyuki]  lost his will [hon'i]. Although  it  might seem to resemble the  epitome of  disservice,  particularly  when  considering  that relatives resided in the west, Tomoyuki  nevertheless did not know the  lay  of the land. The  enemy was in full  pursuit. Having no other  recourse, Tomoyuki crept  into the  capital and fled eastward on the thirtieth. At Mikawa  [Province], a number of skirmishers  [nobushi] repeatedly  tried to take  Tomoyuki's  life.  Any particular  queries  can be answered  by  Ko Goro  Hyoe-no-jo  and Ko Mimasaka Taro,  etc.  Tomoyuki eventually  arrived at Ihara castle in Totomi  [Province] and,  after the  enemy fled,  took his leave and  departed  for the east [the Kanto].

The battle of  Oyama  castle. After the  shogun departed  for the  west,  an uprising by  the forces of Kitabatake Akiie caused the people  to be unsettled. All those allied  [to  the  shogun]  arrived at the encampment  near this castle. Those of this  family  who were of such a mind headed toward  [Oyama's] castle,  where  they performed  continuous  military  service for  many days.  On the third day  of the eleventh month of  1336, during the battle of Yokotamohara, [Tomoyuki?]  took [buntori] one  head,  which was seen  by the commanding general.  In  addition,  his man  [roto]  Obuchi Hikokuro  Nyiudo  was wounded,  which was recorded in  Tomoyuki's report of arrival. This sequence  of events was witnessed  by  the members of this  family.  Both the commanding general  and the grandmother of Oyama  Tsune-inumaru monogrammed  this document.  [Tomoyuki]  also received a document of arrival from Momonoi  Suruga-no-kami [Naotsune].

On the tenth  day  of the third month of this  year (1337),  Oda  Kunai-gon-no-taiyu  and Masado Tora Hosshimaru led substantial rebel forces toward the Hitachi  provincial headquarters. Tomoyuki's representative [daikan] Iwase Hikotaro Nobutsune cut down one  enemy horseman. Masado Hitachi-no-suke Hiromasa rode forth and received notice for his deeds. The  approved petition  for  reward, signed by  Satake  Gyobu-no-taiyu,  makes this clear.

How  important  were the wars of the fourteenth  century?  When viewed quantitatively, the scale of battle appears  to have been small.  During  1336, one can trace the activities of over 1,600 men,  but for most years, fewer than 200 can be verified as  actively fighting. Likewise,  on  average, only  six or seven warriors are mentioned in each document.  Nevertheless, the impact of war was  greater  than these aggregate  numbers would  imply.  War was fought throughout the land  by  warriors from every province, from Mutsu to the north to Satsuma in the south. The war was  general  and endemic-at least 235 days of serious fighting can be traced during  1336 alone.  Every region experienced fighting,  and so even those who  attempted  to remain aloof from the fray were affected  by  war levies and  disruptions  in trade.

The  country, surrounded by seas  and  ocean, receives moisture-laden air from every direction, whose passage  is  impeded by the central mountains.  The result  is  the largest volume  of  precipitation  (1000-3000 mm  per  year)  among  all the temperate countries, far exceeding  that  of  southern  European  countries  on  the same latitude.  In  contrast  to  European  countries, it frequently rains  much  in the summer  because  of  its location  at  the eastern side  of  the continent.

...

Such  precipitation, especially in the summer, promotes the vigorous growth of vegetation, so that Japan also has the largest productivity  of  plant  biomass in the temperate zone.

...

Forests still account for 70  per  cent  of  all the land area  of  present-day  Japan.  The  figure for the  UK  is  10  per  cent. This figure  is in  part  attributable to the existence  of  mountainous areas, which are  not  available for agriculture  or  other purposes, but  also to the swift recovery  of  forests after their disturbance.

...

There  are  no  natural grasslands in  Japan.  It  is  not  that  the climate  is  unsuitable, but  rather  that  grasses are overwhelmed by trees in the struggle for survival.  In areas with sufficient water, the struggle among plants  is  for sunlight,  and  grasses are prevented from growing by tall trees  that  obstruct the sunlight. Because most agricultural plants introduced into  Japan,  such as the various cereals, derive from grasses, it was difficult for them to survive in such a habitat. Moreover, these cereals were first cultivated far from Japan  in different climatic conditions  and consequently are weaker  than  Japanese indigenous grasses. Therefore, cereals require considerable  human  care to generate good harvests in  Japan.

...

Japan  has a total land area  of  38  million hectares, about 1.5 times  that  of  the  UK. However, farmland accounts for only 5.3 million hectares, as compared to 18.6 for the  UK.  This  is  primarily attributable to the fact  that  70  per  cent  of  Japan's  land area  consists  of  steep mountains  (Yomiuri 1993).  The  small plains  and  large  pop- ulation (about twice that  of  the  UK),  make the  Japanese  farmland area  per  person only 0.04 ha,  about  an  eighth  that  of  the  UK.  Despite this small figure,  Japan  has until recently produced most  of  its own agricultural requirements. (Self-sufficiency in food production  is  rapidly declining because  of  changing economic structures, in particular, the increasing export  of  industrial products  and  the increasing importation  of  agricultural products. However, rice, the staple food, continues to be mainly domestically supplied.) This  is  a result  of Japanese farmers who have continuously  been  pursuing new plant varieties  and  better farming methods to obtain higher yields. About one-half  of  all farmland in Japan is wet-rice fields. Pasture land  for stock farming accounts for only 10  per  cent. The  limited plains are used not  for stock farming  but  instead  as  cultivated land for primary food production, especially  as  wet-rice fields, which are stably productive.

...

There are many environmental features that favour the development of wet-rice farming  in Japan.  These include plentiful summer rains,  abundant  streams, sloping plains  and  extensive mountainous areas  around  the plains, which function as water catchment systems, all  of  which permit the development  of  extensive wet-rice fields. Once  the necessary earthworks were carried out, most of the plains could be converted into rice fields. Initially the fields centred  around  small streams, which could be easily controlled with the technology  of  the first farmers.  Their efforts  turned  to increasingly larger streams  and  rivers, continuing up until quite recently. Extensive low-lying alluvial plains with large rivers have been developed into rice fields only since the seventeenth century,  and  at present are the main rice producing areas.

The Nara and Heian states were built on rice. The “agriculture” that formed the base for public income consisted only of rice paddy fields. Public prices for goods and services were calculated in rice, all provincial expenditures of the provinces were underwritten in terms of rice, provincial annual accounts were expressed in volumes of rice, and from the tenth century, all taxes — even manufactured goods — were computed and levied in rice. Crops other than rice were not subject to any regulations and were free from public control and taxes. Only from the seventeenth century did other crops such as wheat come fully under the public tax system, but even then, taxes were levied in rice and not in the crop itself. Rice remained the main accounting device in the public economy until the Meiji period (1868–1912).

The preeminence of the rice economy throughout Japanese history has led to a scarcity of written sources on grains other than rice. For this reason, rice has long been believed by historians — both Japanese and non-Japanese — to have been the main, or even the only, crop and the primary staple food in Japan from early times until the twentieth century. More recently, however, some scholars have challenged this view, citing both written and archaeological evidence for dry-field and slash-and-burn cultivation throughout the premodern era of millets (awa and kibi), wheat and barley (mugi), buckwheat (soba), barnyard grass (hie), and beans including soybeans (daizu) and red beans (azuki). Indeed, it is now argued that dry-field grains dominated the Japanese diet until at least the seventeenth century.

A more anthropological approach to history has enhanced new discoveries in ecohistory and biodiversity. Perhaps the first thing one notices when looking at a topographic map of Japan is that more than 70 percent of the archipelago (excluding Hokkaido) is covered by mountains. In the ancient and medieval periods, then, only about 10 percent of the country consisted of the flat and level surfaces convenient for wet rice agriculture: paddy fields, like swimming pools, cannot be constructed on hillsides without elaborate terracing, lest the water run off. On the other hand, the extensive mountain terrain formed an ideal natural environment for slash-and-burn cultivation, and the population of ancient and medieval Japan lived in surroundings with ample space available for dry crops. There can, moreover, be no doubt that, for their personal needs, premodern Japanese farmers privileged crops that were tax-free and did not demand expensive, backbreaking terracing and irrigation construction.

Nevertheless, it remains unclear how much of the rice harvests in ancient and medieval Japan remained with the cultivators’ households after taxes. Scholars of medieval European history generally assert that proprietors or public authorities absorbed about half of agricultural earnings, leaving the other half for the producers’ consumption. But rice production in eighth-century Japan appears sufficient to have covered less than half the staple food needs of average farming households after taxes, suggesting that millet, wheat, beans, and other grains must have accounted for more than half of the peasants’ daily diet. Clearly, then, a gap must have existed between the public rice economy and the private nutritional practices of the general population during the Nara and Heian periods, a gap that persisted until the seventeenth century. During the entire medieval period, the lion’s share of the rice produced was channeled to the elites in the cities of Nara, Kyoto, and Kamakura and formed the diet of court nobles and military leaders.

Historians’ appraisals of agricultural output and farmland acreage have also changed in recent years. Whereas scholars formerly attributed the expansion of private estates between 1050 and 1150 to large-scale land clearance, most now agree that this expansion mainly involved the reopening of once productive, but then abandoned, land. Similarly, historians have recently revised a long-held assumption that total acreage under cultivation increased dramatically between the late tenth and early eighteenth centuries, recognizing that, while figures reported in historical encyclopedias and official censuses record only paddy fields for the eighth to sixteenth centuries, those for the early modern era include dry fields, which represented about 40 percent of the total farmland.

В XVIII в.

An early-eleventh-century text describes the archetypical member of this order:

"The greatest warrior in the land, he is highly skilled in the conduct of battles, night attacks, archery duels on horseback, and ambushes; in shining for deer, and in all forms of mounted and standing archery. ... He is, moreover, a heavenly gifted genius in the arts of donning armor, bearing bow and arrow, taking up his spear, and using a sword; in flying banners and setting up shields; and in directing companies and leading troops. A fierce and courageous man of great martial skill, he is known to emerge victorious from every battle site; he has yet to know the shame of submission to an enemy".

“Shin sarugakki,” 138

...

Prior to the mid-fifteenth century, warfare in Japan remained small in scale. Even the Mongol invasions of the late thirteenth century involved only a few Japanese defenders, and armies of the fourteenth century consisted of hundreds, rather than thousands, of troops. Military petitions submitted by warriors who fought from 1333 to 1392 reveal that for this span of two generations, a total of 8,634 individuals fought in the civil war, with 1,250 suffering wounds and 1,173 perishing in battle

...

Surprisingly few reliable sources survive for the battles of the 1180s, commonly known as the Genpei Wars. The most important sources for the conflict consist of either court chronicles, such as the Gyokuyo, or compilations of sources such as the Azuma Kagami (Mirror of the East) that were completed roughly a century after the event and are replete with anachronisms. The Kakuichi text of 1371, the most famous version of The Tale of the Heike, which recounts the battles of 1180–1185, contains fabrications, such as the transformation of an aged warrior who in an earlier version of the text cannot flee fast enough, into a tragic figure who dyes his hair black so as to appear young and fights a ferocious rearguard action. Thus, the accurate reconstruction of these wars proves challenging. The Mongol invasions of 1274 and 1281 are the first Japanese wars that can be understood through contemporary documents.

As already noted, the samurai can be accurately described as a hereditary “class” only after establishment of the measures of the Tokugawa regime to stabilize society

Ezoshi.jpg.1a9e81c0e44985abf9de5a122053a06-ezoshi.thumb.jpg.0cb15825fbed6829ffc1
