The sources are strongest about strategic operations. They are weakest at the tactical level. This contrasts dramatically with most western military history. The primary sources for western military history tend to be battle-centered. All of the campaign coverage is simply a preamble to the high drama of the battlefield. It is not by choice that this military history will not follow that pattern. The sources for the Northern Song simply do not allow for a battle-centered history. Indeed, as Ken Chase so pointedly observed, unlike the West, there are very few famous battles in Chinese history.33 Particular battles are not usually presented as historical turning points. This lack in battlefield information is balanced by extensive coverage of the smaller skirmishes, command assignments and march schedules that often elude historians of the west before modern times.34 This information often seems to take over a campaign account as the list of commanders may exceed the length of the account of their activities.

34. Alfred H. Bume in his The Crecy War (London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1955), went to great lengths to reconstruct the movements of medieval armies in order to understand the strategic thinking of their commanders. His aim, as suggested by the title of his book and a later one, The Agincourt War, was to examine medieval war at the strategic, not tactical, battle, level. He wanted to discuss how medieval commanders, in both books, the kings of England and France, conducted wars, not just battles.

...

Our picture is much more strategic and logistical than comparable European primary sources. Chinese historians were concerned with the material basis of warfare and its influence on the outcome of campaigns.

Thornton S.A. Kōnodai senki: Traditional Narrative and Warrior Ideology in Sixteenth-Century Japan // Oral Tradition, 15/2 (2000): 306-376

The situation was resolved by this battle at Kōnodai, which took place on the seventh day of the tenth lunar month of 1538 in what is now Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture, which borders Tokyo on the east. Ashikaga Yoshiaki and Satomi Yoshitaka took up a position on the Ichi River (Ichikawa, more or less on the border between Musashi and Kazusa Provinces); Hōjō Ujitsuna and his son Ujiyasu (1515-70) marched out from their base at Edo Castle. In the battle Yoshiaki, his eldest son, and his brother Motoyori were killed; Satomi Yoshitaka escaped. Their victory in this battle secured for the Hōjō a position in the area that was dominant but not unchallenged (Ichikawa 1971-75, ii:232-41).

The men- at-arms who rode about the battlefields of medieval Japan were known to their contemporaries by a variety of names, including bushi, tsuwamono, mononofu, heishi (or hyōji), and musha, but they are most familiar to modern readers — particularly audiences outside Japan — as samurai. Indeed, the word “samurai” has entered the lexicons of English and numerous other Western languages as a synonym for “Japanese warrior.” In origin and premodern usage, however, the term had a different meaning. Deriving from the verb saburau (“to serve”), it initially designated middle- ranked court nobles who served as personal retainers to high- ranking aristocrats or imperial family members. Although some such retainers performed military duties for their masters, most were civil servants. And while most medieval warriors were also “samurai,” in the sense that they served overlords, it was their profession of arms, rather than this service per se, that defined them.

Historians, therefore, generally prefer the term bushi (literally, “military professional”) as a generic appellation for medieval warriors. Bushi” first came into use during the early eighth century, as a description for military officers and officials, but the warrior order to which scholars today refer by this word began to appear in the provinces and the capital during the tenth century1.

Regental offices were undoubtedly crucial in establishing Fujiwara control at court, though they were not always essential to it. The Fujiwara chieftain par excellence, Michinaga (966–1027), for example, served as regent for only for a short while, using instead the title of nairan (internal examiner of documents) for most of his career. In other words, the Fujiwara dominance, though exerted through their female relatives as mothers of emperors, relied less on specific titles than on direct, private connections and influence over the emperor. Nevertheless, scholars frequently see enough of a change with the appointment of Fujiwara regents and their continued influence that they refer to the period from 858 to 1068 as the era of the Fujiwara regency.

The most  powerful person in Kamakura in 1289 was Taira no Yoritsuna, the man whose wife seeks Lady Nijb's advice in the passage from Towazugatari translated below. Yoritsuna derived his power from his position as advisor  to the eighteen-year-old  regent, Hojo Sadatoki, and  kept  it by  what were considered  unscrupulous means.

Routledge Handbook of Premodern Japanese History. 2017.

It is a curious accident of literary history that the earliest extant manuscript of Kojiki (712), the Shinpukujibon (1372), was copied only one year after Kakuichi dictated his now celebrated version of The Tale of the Heike in 1371.

James Masschaele. Transport Costs in Medieval England //  The Economic History Review,  New Series, Vol. 46, No. 2 (May, 1993), pp. 266-279

A considerable number of these envoys from Yamato were allochthons who themselves or whose ancestors had come over from Paekche, Silla, Koguryŏ, Kaya, some possibly from China itself. Over time they formed uji such as the Aya, Kawachi no fumi, or Hata. These uji names, however, stand for many rather than one single uji. The Yamato no Aya, for example, split into three groups, totaling ninety-one uji. Some, like the Yamato no fumi, were specialized scribes. In the mid-sixth century, the Hata were said to have counted over seven thousand households, possibly an exaggerated figure. Nevertheless, their influence was considerable through the culture and knowledge they had brought with them from overseas.

...

The Soga, themselves possibly of peninsular origin, constituted the major royal in-law group from the time of Kinmei (539–571). Toward the end of the sixth century, they functioned as kingmakers. They used the allochthon uji of the Aya as their private militia. After they massacred their enemy the Mononobe military uji in 587, the Soga became the unchallenged patrons of Buddhism (which continued to be Soga Buddhism until 645) and through it, of continental learning.

...

The claims of Chinese descent made by the two main groups that came over then, the Aya and Hata, is unverifiable. However, they may have been displaced residents from the Chinese commanderies in the peninsula that had disappeared during the warfare of the fourth century. They could have found their way to Yamato, perhaps via Yamato’s post of Mimana (Imna) in Kaya. Their role during the next three centuries, until the early Heian period, was crucial in the transmission of Chinese culture, and very important in a number of political struggles. Put succinctly, they could write and fight. They became comptrollers for the great kings, and introduced mounted archery in the archipelago.

The Aya were the Soga’s military ally for a century and a half. It was an Aya who, on Soga Iruka’s orders, assassinated Great King Sushun in 592. When, ready to fight for the Soga after Iruka’s murder in the coup of 645, they were instead persuaded to lay down their arms, this signaled the beginning of the end for the main Soga line. During Tenmu’s war, they rallied overwhelmingly to his cause (which is why Tenmu, on 677/6/14, overlooking their long association with the Soga, decided to forgive their “past misbehavior”), for which they continued to be praised and rewarded into the Nara period. When in 740 Emperor Shōmu left Nara, traveling first in the direction of Ise, then to Fuwa, following Tenmu’s campaign trail, he was escorted by a combined force of four hundred Aya and Hata mounted warriors. Still later, in 764, the Aya helped put down a rebellion, and the leader of the Sakanoue main Aya house played a decisive role as shogun in campaigns against the Emishi around the turn of the century. In 815, one half (163) of the 324 uji in Heian and the five Home Provinces of the Kinai with declared continental roots claimed Chinese descent. It is important to add that these 324 uji in turn constituted one-third of the Heian nobility’s 1,059 uji.

...

A considerable number of these refugees were well educated and cultivated members of the Paekche nobility and officialdom. In other words, they constituted in embryo a government in exile. In 671, about seventy of them who were first- or second-rank holders in Paekche’s rank system of sixteen tiers were given Yamato court ranks ranging between the equivalents of fourth and seventh junior rank of the later ritsuryō system of 701.

...

Around this time, a number of technological innovations are mentioned in the record and sometimes explicitly linked to allochthons. Prince Naka no Ōe is reported on 671/4/25 to have built a clepsydra (water clock) that was activated several years later. Twice a Buddhist priest from the Yamato no Aya is recorded as having presented a compass to the court (658 and 666). In 670, a new method for smelting iron, using water power, was introduced. On 671/3/3, a man of peninsular ancestry presented a water level to the court.

...

By the early ninth century, as mentioned, one-third of all uji were listed as allochthons: 324 out of the 1,059 uji in Heian and the five Home Provinces according to the Shinsen shōjiroku (Newly Compiled Record of Clan Names), compiled between 799 and 815. (A modern scholar who has traced the uji of all of Japan has come up with the same percentage: 710 out of 2,385).
