Antony Cummins. Old Japan: Secrets from the Shores of the Samurai. 2018

One Western account of the samurai and their weapons is given by Bernardino de Avila Giron, who states that Japanese horses are not good enough to do anything but carry firewood and that the samurai are terrible horsemen compared to those in the West. He states that the samurai walk around in a haughty manner but are masters of being humble when they meet other warriors. He goes on to say that they do not shoot so well with bows, and nock the arrows from the opposite side of the bow. He is not at all disrespectful to the courage or fighting skill of the samurai, but he feels their horsemanship leaves something to be desired.

Bernardino de Ávila Girón was a Spanish merchant and notary who lived in Japan between 1594 and 1619. He traveled from Spain to Manila around 1583, took up residence in Nagasaki and was living there when six missionaries and twenty Japanese were crucified on February 5, 1597. He witnessed the persecution of Christians after the edict of expulsion of European missionaries on February 14, 1614. Based on these experiences and his observation of Japanese customs, he wrote the Relación del reyno del Nippon al que llaman corruptamente Jappon, the only secular account written in Spanish about Japan and the failed expansion of Christendom in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

William Ellis. Polynesian researches, during a residence of nearly six years in the South Sea Islands, Volume 2. 1829

When their modes of attack were deliberate, the celebrated warriors of each army marched forward beyond the first line of the body to which they belonged, and, on approaching the ranks of the enemy, sat down on the sand or the grass. Two or three from one of these parties would then rise, and advancing a few yards towards their opponents, boastfully challenge them to the combat. When the challenge was accepted, which was often with the utmost promptitude, the combatants advanced with intimidating menaces.

These often addressed each other by recounting their names, the names and deeds of their ancestors, their own achievements in combat, the prowess of their arms, and the augmented fame they should acquire by the addition of their present foes to the number of those they had already slain; in conclusion, inviting them to advance, that they might be devoted to their god, who was hovering by to receive the sacrifice. With taunting scorn the antagonist would reply much in the same strain, sometimes mingling affected pity with his denunciations. When they had finished their harangue, the omoreaa, club of insult, or insulting spear, was raised, and the onset commenced. Sometimes it was a single combat, fought in the space between two armies, and in sight of both.

At other times, several men engaged on both sides, when those not engaged, though fully armed and equipped, kept their seat on the ground. If a single combat, when one was disabled or slain, the victor would challenge another; and seldom thought of retreating, so long as one remained. When a number were engaged, and one fell, a warrior from his own party rose, and maintained the struggle; when either party retreated, the ranks of the army to which it belonged rushed forward to sustain it; this brought the opposing army on, and from a single combat or a skirmish, it became a general engagement. The conflict was carried on with the most savage fury, such as barbarous warriors might be expected to evince—who imagined the gods, on whom their destinies depended, had actually entered into their weapons, giving precision and force to their blows, direction to their missiles, and imparting to the whole a supernatural fatality.

...

When a distinguished chief or warrior fell, the party, to which he belonged, retired a short distance, collected some of their bravest men, and then, in a body, with fury and revenge rushed upon their antagonists, to vare toto, clear away the blood. The shock was terrific when they met the opposing ranks, and numbers frequently fell on both sides

Суг., I,4,23; II, 1,6–8).

Dating the Warring States period is subject to debate. Traditionally, it is considered to have begun with the outbreak of the Ōnin War in 1467 and ended when the warlord Oda Nobugawa took Kyoto in 1568. However, widespread warfare continued throughout the so-called “unification” era (1568-1590), and was not wholly finished until the decisive Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Another potential conflict was not fully resolved until the Osaka campaign of 1614-15. In Kai and Shinano, civil war raged from Uesugi Zenshū’s Rebellion of 1417 continuously until the Tokugawa invasion of 1582. This study uses the terms “Warring States,” “Sengoku,” “Civil War Era,” and “late medieval” interchangeably to denote the years of upheaval from roughly 1450-1600. My use of these dates and the labels employed are discussed in subsequent chapters.

Medieval Japan scholars have long discussed the phenomenon of “self-help” (jiriki kyūsai 自力救済, lit. “self-powered aid”) as the underlying principle governing dispute resolution. Self-help discourse certainly remained influential throughout the entire medieval period. Conflict resolution depended upon one’s own action, not only in advocating for a solution, but in its enforcement. We might think such a system would readily dissolve into a crude “might makes right” scenario, but the way in which this discourse operated in medieval Japan was quite complex. A crucial component was that disputant’s actions had to be legitimized by “proper” authority. If they were not, they could be justifiably challenged and nullified.

P.S.

Because “samurai” came to be an official, legally defined status in the late sixteenth century, I primarily use the broader term “warrior” to describe the class of hereditary professional military men who comprised the principle ranks of civil war era armies. Prior to the official designation of samurai as a status group by Hideyoshi in 1590 virtually anyone with the aptitude and means could become a military professional. As it was, there was no clear distinction between such professional warriors and other occupational groups in late medieval society. As we will see, even non-professionals bore arms throughout the civil war period.

The authors state that one of the impressions gained from a reading of the Heike Monogatari is the degree of military technology possessed by the peasantry, which they state was `very high`. Within both the Jishō and Jūei conflicts (both of which occurred as part of the Genpei War), the peasants are described as having possessed `Shishiya 鹿矢` and Kariya `狩り矢`, putting them in the same stead as warriors (description within the Eikyōbon version of the Heike Monogatari). Bows and arrows were necessary everyday implements for the peasantry of the medieval period. In addition to opening up fields within the breaches between valleys, they would use them in hunting and, more importantly, use them for the purposes of defending their territory against intruders. (214-216)

A village would have the exclusive rights to hunt within a certain delineated area of forest or field (known as a 山野用益) which they had to defend against outsiders. If they had been attacked and lost the right to the territory, and if they wished to win back their prestige and rights, then the village had to exercise their own form of justice via use of `jiriki kyūsai` or `jikyūkōi` (commonly translated as `self-help`). Villages of the medieval period were the mainstay of the concept of `jiriki kyūsai`. The rights that the village held could only be protected by the use of force, which meant arming the villagers against intruders (including warriors). Most of those called upon to defend the village were the younger generation, known as a 若衆 (わかしゅう). It was their efforts and the organizational and military skills of the village that enabled them to continue to function as producers.(217)

Many historical records demonstrate that villages would often engage in conflict against their neighbours (who possessed a similar if not identical level of military ability), which could then escalate into a `war`, with more and more villages being drawn into battle until the scale was increased expedientially.(217) Hence villagers in the same area would attack one another, burn down dwellings, and make off with crops and prisoners. This situation was serious for the villages concerned, for if a village could not protect itself against incursions it would inevitably disappear.

When defending one`s regional rights and right to information from others, jiriki kyūsai called for the exercise of group effort. As for actions derived from `appropriate sources` (適法行為), a public law regarding sovereignty (統治権) had not yet come into being. Hence within this society, the peasantry assembled in the villages had to decide on what they would protect the village against, and what level and type of violence they would exercise.(218)

Saitō Toshio et al, Ikki (Volume Two) The History of Ikki, Tokyo University Publishing, Tokyo, 1981

The early fifteenth century had already borne witness to the polarization within villages between the common peasantry and the wealthier jizamurai class, who bore weapons and surnames. In or around 1430, this particular division into two classes changed the appearance of the shōke ikki. Through compromise with the shōen owners, the jizamurai class took on a role as one part of the system of control of the land owner, and by doing so raised their profile within the village itself. In contrast, the common peasantry began to exhibit signs that they were prepared to break through the burden of interest that they bore as peasants. Yet the shōke ikki continued to play a role as a place where both sides joined together as shōen residents, and continued much as the sō had done before. Within tokusei ikki, this again was a bedrock upon which the sō came together as one. However, as most of the profits from tokusei edicts fell into the hands o f the jizamurai class, the division within the villages became more pronounced.

...

Apparently both armies had engaged in the looting and burning of villages, thus destroying the livelihoods of the inhabitants and raising their ire against these marauding armies. The peasantry and manufacturer classes started to raise their voices in support of the withdrawal of both armies, a point that gradually spread throughout the sō village and further afield. As far as the kokujin were concerned, the villages under their jurisdiction were being destroyed, meaning that their income and the opportunity for expansion of their forces were being eroded. Moreover, these kokujin felt an acute sense of danger that their territory might be seized by forces from another province, thus an attempt was made on behalf of ten representatives of the kokujin class to call for an end to hostilities. In the tenth month of 1482, on the 11th day, a union of kokujin members and the peasantry from throughout Yamashiro gathered together in a `gun shū`, (群集) demanding the withdrawal of both armies from the province. If this was not done, then they (the Kanrei and Hatakeyama) would be attacked by the forces of the province. These kokujin continued in their planning against the forces of the warring factions, until on the 17th they convinced both armies to depart Yamashiro. Hence these kokujin members of Yamashiro managed to drive out both armies and based on a three point article, rule over the province in stead of the Hatakeyama. (98)

A particular characteristic of this sōkoku ikki was a denial of the authority of the shugo, and an ikki in which the kokujin of a province secured the right to rule over that province. Yet this form of ikki also featured a gathering of kokujin and `the gun shū of commoners from throughout the province`.(95) The sum total of this particular argument was that in the shōen system of the central region, the shōen owner, shugo, kokujin, and peasantry all had their own interests, which saw an increase in conflicts throughout the period in question. Both the kokujin and the sō village held their own logic backing their actions, which is why this in itself was so representative of ikki as a whole.(97) The entire phenomenon of the Yamashiro kuni ikki saw the creation of a two tiered form of ikki – one including a collection of kokujin, and the other consisting of a gun shū of peasantry, or an ikki by the kokujin and another by the peasantry. Whilst it managed to confine the most basic of disputes to an internal conflict, the kokujin ikki took command, and thus enabled the ikki to drive out those forces from other provinces. In this sense, smaller land owners made their allegiances with both types of ikki. From 1485 through to 1493 the province was run by this ikki of kokujin, whereas the ikki formed by the peasantry of the sō villages, as an ikki of the non-controlling classes, placed what demands they had on the sō kuni. Based on these premises, it is important to distinguish a sō koku ikki from a kokujin ikki (as their motives were different, as were their outcomes).(98)

During the first half of the fifteenth century, when a number of tsuchi ikki (tokusei ikki) occurred in the Kinai and surrounding region, the basic form of conflict for political power was divided into two sides - one dealing with the Bakufu, shugo, shōen owners (kuge and large scale temples), profiteers from among the town and city money lenders (tera-iori and tsuchi kura 土倉) and kokujin land owners (all otherwise known as figures of authority), and the other dealing with dogō and those lower on the village social scale. The position of the dogō therefore played an important role in illuminating the political and economic (and class) contradictions in place at the time (the argument has been made, particularly by Kurokawa Nao(則), that the kokujin status class should be kept separate from that of the dogō, on account of the scale of their holdings and activities).(144)

One of the main characteristics of the dogō class was possession of status. The initial stage in the manifestation of this class identity came in the form of the myōshu class in the early medieval period. Following the breakup of this class (for distribution either up or down the social scale), those still of myōshu class status took hold of the fruits that stemmed from the development of production capacity in the latter Kamakura era, and by making effective use of high yield capital goods (rice, buckwheat, coin), they were able to secure much larger sections of land for their own use. The administration of such land was dealt with by one part usually being directly administered by the myōshu family, with the rest being administered by subordinates (下人) such as myōshi and hikan who were in direct contact with the labourers. A majority of labourers (such as indentured peasants) served these subordinates or else they were indentured to mid-to-lower status peasants within the villages (thus creating a dual low status labour force).(144)

The abode of the dogō was placed in the middle of the directly administered land, with indentured labourers living in the surrounding area. Moreover, there was a trend towards distributing land out to small scale producers (peasants) who lived outside of the immediate area. Hence a more precise class definition for the dogō would be `a predominantly agriculturally based, peasant administrating land owner`. In the first half of the medieval period, local myōshu and myōshu themselves directly administered the land they owned, yet the development of production in the latter medieval period brought on a high point in the buying and selling of land, hence land ownership, and the creation of ties to small production underwent a period of `generalization`. At the same time, the provocation of locally based labour as a result of a growing stand off against common peasants was avoided by producing smaller plots of land for direct administration (and the labour to go with it) and the production of small scale crops. The rural environment was thus underwent a change, in closer relations with the small scale production system, which created results vis-à-vis production in total.(145)

The dogō were, admittedly, exploitative in relation to their subordinates and small scale producers, yet they were the essence the same as those peasants who owned their own land. From the authorities, they were seen as `jige hyakushō`, who existed to collect and distribute tithes and perform public duties. Those persons of dogō status would also have a dual position in the shōen, overseeing its entire function and the storage of goods, and thus they were able to grab hold of an intermediary role.(145)
The second characteristic of the dogō class was their affiliation with authority organizations. These might have gone by various different names, such as satajin, sanshoku, jige daikan and the like, yet by and large the dogō served at the very end of a system of authority responsible for the collection of tithes and for public duties under the administration of a daikan, who himself was under the direct control of the owner of the shōen.(145)

The third characteristic was the relation of dogō to the village`s joint system of administration, otherwise known as the sō. In sum, the dogō, as an otona, was of peasant status, yet from the owner of the shōen he would receive the epithet of `kata`, and from the peasants themselves he would be known as `dono`. Thus in his capacity as a jizamurai and a donohara, he was a separate class to the other, general peasants, in possession of a special status. As the Honpukuji Atogaki put it 「隣郷イカナル里ニモ老(おとな)二成テ得分(とくぶん)アリ」. These were the most common traits of the dogō.(145)

Yet others could be added, for example a particularly auspicious piece of land could be owned by a group of the same family name, thus establishing a blood tie over that land. Moreover, there were those dogō who became the hikan for kuge, shugo, and kokujin, but this was not a necessary condition for a dogō. The class status of a dogō was basically tied to the institution of the village (or sō), who exercised authority as the farthest extention of that authority over the village. As some also served in a vassal relationship with kuge and samurai families, this trait may also be added to the general appearance of the dogō. (146)
