“Kano Bicchumori kaei gonen kacchu chakuyo choren ezu” [“Military Exercises at the Estate of Kano, Lord of Bicchu, in the Fifth Year of Kaei”]. One picture scroll, 263 x 10,170 mm., with numerous illus. and black & red manuscript explanatory text.

Kano, Hisaakira, 2nd Fiefdom Lord of Ichinomiya-han.

[From the preface]: “April 1852.”

In the early 1850s, Japan still maintained sakoku, a policy of isolationism established in 1635 and intended to minimize foreign influence. The governments of Britain, the United States, and Russia, were each determined to be the first to benefit from trade with Japan. Within Japan, there was a growing and passionate debate about how to respond to foreign incursions. Two major camps formed: one claimed it was necessary to use foreign technology in order to repel invasions; the other argued that only traditional Japanese methods should be employed. Our scroll depicts the integration of Western weapons into this faction’s strategy.

This is a finely illustrated scroll with bird’s-eye views of Lord Hisaakira Kano’s well-equipped private army at a shimoyashiki (a secondary estate) outside of central Edo. It depicts military exercises which took place a year before Commodore Matthew Perry’s first arrival. The scroll vividly illustrates formations, uniforms, and the coordinated use of rifles and cannons. In one of the scenes depicted in our scroll, Kano (1813-64), second lord of Ichinomiya-han in Kazusa province, is shown leading the exhibition of his troops’ capabilities. A top minister of security, Kano advised the shogun closely on matters of national defense. An authority on such matters, he prioritized the coastal defenses of his province, which occupied a key strategic location close to Edo. Kano’s army, composed of farmers, fishermen, and merchants, was superbly organized and well-equipped with the latest military technology supplied by the Dutch.

The preface by Ishishi Keikyo (probably a pen-name) announces the depicted exercises as a momentous occasion celebrating Kano’s military expertise. The scroll opens with a close-up at the entrance of the estate, which has been heavily decorated with the battle banners of the Kano family, as a dignitary arrives with his attendants. Guards stand ready to inspect them. The next panel offers a more expansive view, from a greater distance, of the parade grounds and the preparations for the exercises. On the right are the headquarters where the leaders (some named in red) have placed their ceremonial armor and weapons. In the background, troops in makeshift structures prepare for the display by putting on their armor.

The following panels show Kano troops in formation as the exercises begin. They divide themselves into smaller squads, each behind their own colored flag, then form a procession in the shape of a square. The text in black provides the name of the formation (i.e. kagyu no jin “snail formation”; koya maedatami “defensive lines”; gyogun “marching formation”; yonchojo “four line formation”; juni inyo “twelve lines”; zenjin tezume daishohorenpatsu “cannon and rifle formation”; senjin kojin sogakari daishojurenpatsu “frontline and backline charge together with small guns”; sogun tsuiho “all-out assault”; and ryogun gattai “final assembly”). The red text meticulously describes the composition and purposes of each formation, as well as naming many of the generals involved.

Subsequent sections depict the live-fire portion of the exercise. The riflemen form long lines adjacent to several cannons. Behind long sheets held up by two men, they fire into empty space. The brushwork masterfully renders the billowing gunpowder smoke. Soldiers armed with spears and swords charge at the imaginary enemy, while the riflemen and cannoneers smile, their part of the job complete. At this point, the amount of red text increases greatly, likely because of the explanation of weapons and tactics unfamiliar to many in Japan. In the penultimate panel, the riflemen and cannons create a longer line, fire, then charge with their comrades to land the finishing blow. In the final section, the troops join in formation around their leader Lord Kano. Different squads are distinguished by colored banners and armor.

Wooden armor from the Japanese archipelago can be categorized into two types: plate armor made by binding numerous wooden tabs together (Fig. 2a) and “fitted” cuirasses made by hollowing out a log and comprising a single rear and two front sections (Fig. 2b) (Hashimoto,1996; Kamiya, 2010).The former are confined to the second half of the first millennium BCE and may represent continental influence. The latter are believed to be a domestic development and stretch from the second half of the first millennium BCE to the late fourth century CE.

Moreover, the discovery in late 2012 of dozens of bone lamellae at the early sixth-century Kanai-higashiura site in Gunma Prefecture attests to the diverse nature of materials used.

The introduction of lamellar armor has traditionally been interpreted as signaling the spread of horse-riding culture and the establishment of an equestrian elite. An analysis of the earliest lamellar armor and horse trappings in the archipelago, however, reveals they are not discovered together; approximately half a century passes before they appear together with any frequency. Moreover, the common assumption that lamellar armor was for equestrian and plate armor was for foot soldiers has also been called into question. Of fifth-century tombs, horse trappings are found paired with lamellar armor in 31 tombs and plate armor in 83 tombs

Another example is the Japanese. For many tens of thousands of years, the Japanese archipelago was dominated by hunter-gatherers, but after around twenty-three hundred years ago, mainland-derived agriculture began to be practiced and was associated with an archaeological culture with clear similarities to contemporary cultures on the Korean peninsula. The genetic data confirm that the spread of farming to the islands was mediated by migration. Modeling present-day Japanese as a mixture of two anciently divergent populations of entirely East Asian origin — one related to present-day Koreans and one related to the Ainu who today are restricted to the northernmost Japanese island and whose DNA is similar to that of pre-farming hunter- gatherers  —  Naruya Saitou and colleagues estimated that present-day Japanese have about 80 percent farmer and 20 percent hunter-gatherer ancestry. Relying on the sizes of segments of farmer-related ancestry in present-day Japanese, we and Saitou estimated the average date of mixture to be around sixteen hundred years agoThis date is far later than the first arrival of farmers to the region and suggests that after their arrival, it may have taken hundreds of years for social segregation between hunter-gatherers and farmers to break down. The date corresponds to the Kofun period, the first time when many Japanese islands were united under a single rule, perhaps marking the beginnings of the homogeneity that characterizes much of Japan today.

Microsatellite Variation in Japanese and Asian Horses and Their Phylogenetic Relationship Using a European Horse Outgroup // Journal of Heredity 94(5). 2003

In the domestic livestock species of Japan, the populations of native horses (Equus caballus) have been insulated from other horse populations and relatively free of artificial selection. Currently there are eight local populations of Japanese horses: Hokkaido, Kiso, Misaki, Noma, Taishu, Tokara, Miyako, and Yonaguni. The phylogenetic relationships among these Japanese horse populations is not well elucidated. Horses native to Japan have been kept in their local areas to avoid extinction, although there was previously some gene flow between the Japanese horse populations. The population sizes of these Japanese horses range from 35 to 100 horses, except for the native horses from Hokkaido, which include more than 2,000 horses (Nozawa 1992).

Hayashida (1958) classified Japanese horses into two groups according to body size and location. Medium-size and small-size horses are 130–140 cm and 110–120 cm in withers height, respectively. The medium-size horsesHokkaido, Kiso, and Misaki horses — live mainly on the three main islands of Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu). The small-size horses — Noma, Taishu, Tokara, Miyako, and Yonaguni horses — live on islets (Shikoku, Tsushima, Tokara, Miyako, and Yonaguni) south and west of the main islands.

III.9

III.1

G. Cameron Hurst III. Armed Martial Arts of Japan: Swordsmanship and Archery. 1998

Peace, urbanization, the growth of a civil culture, and the professionalization of the teaching of fighting skills gave rise to a type of swordsmanship known as kata kenjutsu, that flourished in the late seventeenth century and persisted throughout the Tokugawa period. In kata kenjutsu the swordsman focused on the mastery of kata - the patterns or forms developed by the founder of the ryu out of his combat experiences. As with other forms of cultural expression, the fastest and most accurate method of mastering swordsmanship techniques was deemed to be the constant repetition of these kata under the supervision of an unchallenged teacher. Kata were especially valued in swordsmanship, but in the late 1600s almost a century had passed since they were used in combat, and much of their original meaning had been lost. The constant repetition of such patterns could, and did, deteriorate into an extreme formalism that emphasized the outward elegance of the kata.

From Self-Protection to Self-Perfection in the Early and Mid Tokugawa

All the daimyo of the early Tokugawa period — men like Hosokawa Tadatoshi of Higo and Nabeshima Naotomo of Hizen — were battle-tested warriors. They vied with one another in inviting masters of sword, spear, bow, gun, and military strategy to serve as instructors for their samurai. The ranks of their troops swelled with warriors long accustomed to the bloodshed of the battlefield, men devoted to the mastery of martial skills. The warriors included swordsmen like Miyamoto Musashi and Yagyu Munenori, archers like Yoshida Issuiken Insai, and masters of the spear like Hozoin In'ei.

The seriousness with which the early Tokugawa warrior approached the mastery of martial techniques is indicated by the heightened popularity of musha shugyo. As we have seen, it was a training period during which the devotee struggled to further his skills with sword, spear, or other weapons and to train his mind and refine his character through various ascetic practices. With the advent of peace following the Osaka and Shimabara campaigns, however, bushi were no longer able to embark on such quests in hopes of gaining glory in battle or rewards for spying. Instead, they became concerned more with the perfection of specific techniques and moral development.

In a second period, dating from 1644 and lasting perhaps until 1789 (the beginning of the Kansei era), swordsmanship in the peaceful mid-Tokugawa developed into a true martial art practiced in training halls only for paramilitary purposes. A final period, from the late eighteenth century until the fall of the bakufu, witnessed the development of true competitive fencing, the forerunner of modern kendo.

Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Vermilion Seal Letter to Asano Nagamasa on Cadastral Survey, 1590

Concerning your surveying of the lands, on matters such as determination of the expected amount to be harvested (todai), you must follow the intent of this vermilion seal letter, as you were commanded to do so the day before yesterday. In everything, given scrupulous care. Do not make a careless mistake, nor go beyond the authority which is given you. I hereby command that you thoroughly communicate to local samurai (kokujin) and farmers, so that they can understand [the intent of this measure]. If there is anyone who does not obey this order, if he is a master of a castle, besiege him in his castle, and after due deliberation amongst you, have everyone in his castle killed. If disobedience is spread even among the farmers, slaughter every one of those living in one or two counties (go). This order is to be strictly obeyed in the more than sixty provinces of this country, and no careless mistake is to be permitted even in [such remote provinces as] Dewa and Osho. It is acceptable if [pursuant to this order] lands without cultivators are created. You must understand the intent of this letter, and do your utmost in the places as far as the deepest reach of the mountains and the farthest point the oars can go in the seas. If you slacken your efforts, the Kampaku (Hideyoshi) himself will come to oversee the matter.

It is hereby ordered. Answer immediately if it can be done accordingly.
Eighteenth year of Tensho [1590], eighth month, 12th day.

John Saris. The voyage of Captain John Saris to Japan, 1613. 1900

We found here a Garrison of three thousand Souldiers maintayned by the Emperour, to keepe Miaco and Osaca in subiection. The Garrison is shifted euery three yeares, which change happened to be at our being there, so that we saw the old Bands march away, and the new enter, in most Souldier-like manner, marching fiue abrest, and to euery ten files an Officer which is called a Captaine of fiftie, who kept them continually in verie good order. First, their shot, viz. Calieuers (for Muskets they haue none, neyther will they vse any); then followed Pikes, next Swords, or Cattans and Targets, then Bowes and Arrowes; next those weapons resembling a Welch-hooke called Waggadashes; then Calieuers againe, and so as formerly, without any Ensigne or Colours : neyther had they any Drummes or other musicall Intruments for Warre. The first file of the Cattans and Targets had siluer scabberds to their Cattans, and the last file which was next to the Captaine had their scabberds of gold. The Companies consisted of diuers numbers, some fiue hundred, some three hundred, some one hundred and fiftie men. In the midst of euery Companie were three Horses very richly trapped, and furnished with Sadies, well set out, some couered with costly Furres, some with Veluet, some with Stammet broad-cloth ; euery Horse had three slaues to attend him, ledde with silken halters, their eyes couered with lether couers. After euery Troope followed the Captaine on Horse-backe; his bed and other necessaries were laid vpon his owne Horse, equally peased on either side; ouer the same was spread a couering of redde felt of China, whereupon the Captaine did sit crosse-legged, as if hee had sate betwixt a a couple of panniers: and for those that were ancient or otherwise weake-backt, they had a staffe artificially fixed vnto the Pannel, that the Rider might rest himselfe, and leane backward against it, as if he were sitting in a chaire. The Captaine Generall of this Garrison wee met two dayes after we had met his first troop (hauing still in the meanetime met with some of these Companies as we passed along, sometimes one league, sometimes two leagues distant one from another). Hee marched in very great state, beyond that the others did (for the second Troope was more richly set out in their armes then the first, and the third then the second, and so still euery one better then other, vntill it came unto this the last and best of all).

His Horses for his owne Sadie being sixe in number, richly trapped. Their Horses are not tall, but of the size of our midling Nags, short and well trust, small headed and very full of mettle, in my opinion farre excelling the Spanish Iennet in pride and stomacke

And towards evening the King sent 2 varnished Armors, a present to his Majesty the King of England, Allso a Tatch [or long sword, (which none weare there but souldiers of the best ranke)] and a wagadash a present from him to my selfe.

A.L. Sadler. The Maker of Modern Japan. The Life of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Amongst the earliest evidence for horses in Japan is the tooth remains found at the late fourth-century ad Shiobe Site in Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan (Nishimoto, 1996; Muraishi, 1998). While it is possible that horses arrived earlier in northern Kyushu, which lies along the route by which they were transported from mainland Asia (Nishimoto and Niimi, 2010: 144), the majority of the archaeological evidence comes from contexts of the fifth century AD and later. An eighth-century AD historical source states that two horses were received from the King of Paekche in the fifth century AD, which corresponds in timing with a rise in the quantity of archaeological horse remains.

Offerings of decorative horse tacks in tumuli and clay horse figurines, as well as findings of horse bones, increase in archaeological sites from the second half of the fifth century AD.

Measurements of excavated horse skeletons have determined that the horses from the fifth century ad sites are all small (Nishinakagawa and Matsumoto, 1991; Nishimoto and Niimi, 2010: 160). Medium-size horses with withers heights of over 130 cm appear by the eighth century AD (Nishimoto, 2008). A large number of horse bones were found at Yuigahama South site (fourteenth to fifteenth century AD) in Kamakura, the seat of the Shogunate in this period. While most of the horse remains were found scattered in the refuse area, there was also a burial of a relatively large horse, with a withers height of 140 cm. In addition to its large size, the individual had relatively longer legs compared with modern native Japanese breeds (Uzawa and Hongo, 2006). It is suggested that this individual is an example of a small number of fine horses that were kept by the elite class and received special treatment.

Japanese chronological tables, showing the date, according to the Julian or Gregorian calendar, of the first day of each Japanese month : from Tai-kwa 1st year to Mei-ji 6th year (645 A.D. to 1873 A.D.): with an introductory essay on Japanese chronology and calendars. 1910

Smail. Crusading Warfare 1097-1193, хоть в Steven Tibble. The Crusader Armies: 1099-1187 (!)...
