The most common weapon in the traditional arsenal was the bow and poisoned arrow. While types of bows, arrows, and poisons applied to their tips might vary, such an overall similarity in the manufacture and use of this weapon existed that it is possible to speak generally about techniques. Arrows were about 1 ft. long and tipped with iron, usually barbed, but occasionally simply rectangular, with a poorly filed tip. The use of iron tips meant that, though an individual might obtain and prepare the wood for the shaft, the blacksmith was the principal manufacturer of the weapon. Smiths employed a vegetable fibre to hold the iron tip in place. The opposite end of the arrow might have a little casing of straw for ornamental purposes, but no feathering. Bow-makers used strings of bamboo, which they fastened to the bow with leather thongs. The bow ranged in length from 30 to 40 in.

The technique of employing this weapon was straightforward. Archers carried their quivers, filled with up to forty or fifty arrows, over their shoulders, and relied for success upon as heavy a barrage of arrows as they could achieve, some men firing two arrows at a time. In the absence of feathering, and thus of accuracy, this was perhaps the most sensible method of employment

Archers placed great faith in the effectiveness of the arrow poison. Throughout the savanna zone of the Western Sudan, poison mixtures were complex, but the toxic base was invariably the grains of the strophantus hispidus plant. Occasionally, venom from cobras or other poisonous snakes or the stingers of scorpions were added, as were putrified meats and other plants with no toxic elements at all. Each maker of poison had his own highly special plants personal to him, so that no two compositions were ever quite alike. Analysis by botanists and other investigators during the colonial period indicated that these personal plants were not toxic. Nevertheless, each maker of poison considered these plants vital to success. Poison-making was not entirely an empirical undertaking, since the manufacturer believed the malevolent spirits associated with death to be as important to the process as the ingredients. A whole series of sanctions and taboos were involved in the art.

The strophantus plant contains a toxic element called strophantine. It belongs to the digitalis family, a well-known heart stimulant in modern medicine. Strophantine acts by weakening the heart muscle and stopping the heart through systole. In the western Sudan, the poison, when effective in entering the blood stream, could bring about death quite quickly, within a matter of ten to thirty minutes

African soldiers possessed antidotes for the arrow poison, and carried these into battle in a pouch or sheep's horn. These usually had alkaloid or glucose bases. One favourite remedy consisted of a black paste made up of carbon, shea butter and other materials. French physicians in the battle area were often short of drugs, and agreed on the value of African preparations, using them with what they felt were favourable results. Europeans in the ranks, such as foreign Ugionnaires and other enlisted men, followed African practice; they too carried the shea butter mixture with them into battle.

Armies in the Niger bend did not adopt firearms until late in the nineteenth century, though a few such weapons had certainly appeared in the region before then. ... But the first significant appearance of firearms in Upper Volta did not occur until the Zaberma brought them when they occupied Gurunsi country between 1875 and 1880. Al-Kari of Bousse, who had studied at Djenne and had made the pilgrimage to Mecca around 1880, also knew of the new arms, and he spent three or four years building up his arsenal in muzzle-loaders and powder before launching his jihad in 1892

If a few groups possessed muskets, rapid firing and repeating arms were very rare in the Niger bend. No existing evidence suggests the Mossi had any at all; it is doubtful if the Marka army had more than a handful.

At times, Africans purchased calibrated shot for their arms, but this was the exception rather than the rule. Much more important was local production by blacksmiths of projectiles of various shapes. Some shot were round, others prismatic or irregular, made equally of worked iron or of crudely rounded ferruginous stone. Calibres were usually large, attaining the size of pigeons' eggs in some cases. Also, shot were roughly uniform in size irrespective of the calibre of the musket.

Throughout the western Sudan by the 1880s, muskets were no longer exotic weapons. This is the case even for the Niger bend, one of the last regions in West African to acquire muskets either from the south or the north.

As opposed to the musket, the bow had the advantage of familiarity and of safety for the user. The bow's effective range was said to be about fifty to seventy-five yards. Up to that distance, the arrow was capable of substantial penetration and damage, even if it was not an effective longrange weapon. Manin, the French doctor present at the battle of Bouss, witnessed a case where an arrow fired within this range perforated the skull of a French tirailleur. But there were defences against the arrow. The French columns suffered few abdominal wounds, since their soldiers adopted the Mossi practice of tying blankets, bou-bous and other articles around their waists. Most wounds in fact occurred in the exposed members and in the head and neck.

The musket was certainly more dangerous to the user than the bow. Chamber explosions and powder burns were common, not only in West Africa, but everywhere that muskets were employed. They were also more complicated to charge, and it took time and a certain ability to acquire the necessary skills. Muskets were, however, capable of doing damage at greater distances than the bow. French sources state that the typical West African musket had an effective range of up to two hundred yards, almost three times that of the bow.

In an all-day battle at Bousse on July 1 1894, the French column led by Captain Bonaccorsi had twelve men killed and one hundred and seventeen wounded. The Marka at Bousse resisted to the bitter end and left no survivors. The next day, the French picked up eighty muskets of variable length and quality among the dead. How many defenders there were at Bousse the day of the battle is not known, but archers probably outnumbered those using muskets by a considerable margin. Muskets killed eight men outright and wounded thirty-seven, about half of these with bones broken and other injuries serious enough to keep them out of battle for several weeks. Arrows killed four French tirailleurs, and wounded eighty, of whom four died soon after as a result of complications caused by the arrow poison. But about half of the eighty wounded were so slightly touched that they were able to return to battle that same day. So a minority of some eighty guns killed the same number as did arrows, and put about twenty-five men out of action, while arrows did the same for about forty men.

In the recent war between China and Japan, 1894-95, the repeating crossbow was frequently seen among troops who came from the interior of the first-named country.

fort-taku.png.6cc3722721847a676b95599780

training.jpg.649cb59a7bf05f8722505bdcde8

5d1d0b0469269_.thumb.jpg.b7cc37f265137f1

t014cc1ac50e167b74d.thumb.jpg.1b46b1685c

The Zhuge Nu is a handy little weapon that even the Confucian scholar (i.e., a weakling) or palace women can use in self-defense. It fires weakly so you have to tip the darts with poison. Once the darts are tipped with 'tiger-killing poison,' you can fire it at a horse or a man and as long as you draw blood, your adversary will die immediately. The draw-back to the weapon is its very limited range.

Transl. by Stephen Selby.

sunogi.jpg.326a4c7e769c2a9de5e30b6877241

Four major documentary accounts of the De Soto entrada have  survived to the present day (Clayton, Knight, and Moore 1993). These are, in order of publication or appearance, the narratives of: Rodrigo Ranjel (1904/1993), written during the expedition and finalized some time before August 1546; Luis Hermindez de Biedma (1904/1993), written in 1544; the Gentleman of Elvas (1904/1993), first published in 1557 and hence written some time before this; and Garcilaso de la Vega (1951/1993), completed in the late 1580s or early 1590s and first published in 1601.

The first of the four accounts to have been produced, at least in large measure, was that by Ranjel, De Soto's private secretary. This account is actually a diary of the events of the entrada, recorded either daily or at brief intervals. This account, covering the period from May 1539  through September 1541, was transcribed by Oviedo in Santo Domingo some time after Ranjel's return to the island but prior to August 1546, when Oviedo left for Spain (Ranjel in Bourne 1904, 2:48).

So detailed was Ranjel's account that Oviedo (in Bourne 1904, 2:47; see also Worth 1993a:277) felt compelled to offer the following remarks: "let not the reader marvel that the historian goes over, in exact detail, the days marches and rivers and crossings that this Commander  encountered ... because among those gentlemen who were with the army there was one named Rodrigo Ranjel  ... who ... wrote down day by day at the end of his labors, every thing that happened." While presenting valuable detail on the native societies in the region, the account additionally offers an instructive example of the insidious kind of bias that can occur in historic accounts: the deliberate falsification or distortion of information. In his last communication with Cuba, for example, De Soto ordered that "even though he might not find good land, he should write good news, in order to inspire the men" (Ranjel in Worth 1993a:258; see also Bourne 1904, 2:62).

Luis Hernandez de Biedma was the king's factor, and the narrative that he prepared was an official account of the expedition
submitted to the Spanish crown
. The shortest of all the accountsthe narrative is highly compressed and offers little that was not mentioned in the other accounts in the way of detail about the native societies. Although in broad agreement with the Ranjel and Elvas accounts, because it is an obvious summary prepared up to several years after the events in question, it is generally considered unreliable as a source of specific information about the chronology of the entrada or the terrain that it passed over.

The third source, and the first of the De Soto accounts actually published, appeared in 1557 (Elvas in Bourne 1904, 1:1-223; see also Robertson 1993). Written by an unidentified "Gentleman from Elvas" who accompanied  De Soto, the account provides a wealth of detail about the expedition and the peoples it encountered. Although this record had long been considered less reliable than Vega's narrative, the discovery of the Ranjel and Biedma accounts in the mid-19th century provided "triumphant support" for its accuracy (Swanton 1932:571; see similar commentary in Bourne 1904, l:viii).

As a boy growing up in Peru, Vega met some of the survivors of the De Soto expedition, and upon moving to Spain in 1560, he met several additional members. His manuscript was based on the memories of at least three of these survivors, of  whom the cavalier Gonzalo Silvestre is assumed to be his principal informant, given his prominent role in (only) this account (viii-ix). The most extensive document describing the entrada, it is also regarded as the least reliable, primarily because it was written long after the events described (Galloway 1990, 1991, 1992, n.d.; Henige 1986; Hudson, Smith, and  DePratter 1984:655; Swanton 1932:571). La Florida thus diverges wildly from the other three accounts in specific detail, notably in matters of chronology, distance, travel time, and casualty figures. Thus while Elvas records that 700 bearers accompanied De Soto from Ocute to Cofitachequi (Robertson 1993:80; see also Bourne 1904, 1:60), Vega puts the figure at 4,000 (Shelby 1993:272; see also Varner and Varner 1951:282). At the battle of Mauvila, both Elvas and Ranjel put the Indians' casualties  at  between 2,500 and 3,000 (Robertson 1993:104; Worth 1993a:294; see also Bourne 1904, 1 :97; 2: 128), while Vega puts the figures at around 11,000 (Shelby 1993:351; see also Varner and Varner 1951:379).

Much has been made of Vega's inaccuracies, but this should not be used to discredit the source, since it stands as virtually the only sympathetic, detailed Spanish account of the southeastern Indians produced during the 16th century, by someone justifiably and admittedly proud of his dual Spanish/Indian heritage. Furthermore, Vega's preface contains a lengthy discussion of both his methods and sources and how he resolved discrepancies between conflicting accounts. Above all, he fully acknowledged the potential for error in his work, particularly the problems arising from his use of informants' dated memories and limited written accounts: "It is true that in their proceedings they have no regard for chronology, unless it be at the beginning, nor for order in the events they recount, because they put some too soon and others too late, nor do they name provinces, except for a few scattered ones. They simply tell the most important things that they saw as they happen to remember them"  (Vega in Shelby 1993:55-56; see also Varner and Varner 1951:xl-xli).

The others [killed] were foot soldiers. As soon  as  we left the town, we mounted our horses and encircled the entire town, so that the Indians might  not  get away from us on any side, and the Governor decided that sixty or eighty of us should dismount, those of us who were best armed, and that we should form ourselves in four squads and assault the town on four sides, and  that  the first to enter should set fire to the houses, so  that  they might not do us more damage from within, and that we should give the horses to other soldiers who were not armed, so that if some Indians should come forth from the town in order to flee, they might overtake them. We entered within the town and set fire, where a quantity of Indians were burned, and all our supplies were burned, so that not one thing remained.

The  Governor gathered all the forty on horseback who were there, and they arrived at a large plaza in front  of  the principal gate  of Mabila, and there the Indians came forth, without  daring to venture far from the palisade; and in  order  to  draw them  out,  they pretended that those  on  horse-back were fleeing at a gallop, withdrawing far from the ramparts, and the Indians, believing it, ventured from the town and from the palisade in their pursuit, desirous of employing their arrows, and when it was time, those  on horseback turned around on their enemies, and before they could take shelter, they lanced many. Don  Carlos wished to go with his horse up  to  the gate, and they gave his horse an arrow  wound  in the breast, and  not  being able to  turn  [his horse], he dismounted to  draw  out  the arrow, and another came which struck him in the neck, above his shoulder, from which, asking for confession, he fell dead.

Evidence for the accuracy of longbows comes from various sources. Unfortunately, few are reliable. Pictorial sources invariably lack realistic perspective, or if they are accurate then the archers in the Luttrell Psalter could not hit a barn door at 50 paces! Where there are realistic representations of archery ranges they are about 30 or 40 yards in length, although usually depicted with crossbows being used. The one Flemish illustration of a longbow practise, in the midst of a village street scene, The Fair at Hoboken, has the targets placed about 30 yards apart. The targets appear not dissimilar in size to those used today by archers at this range: roundels of 60-80 cm in diameter.

There is a tremendous irony that the best account of medieval target archery is from France. The Tir au Bersault  was an archery practice established in France in the late Middle Ages and still shot today. It was designed to encourage the Francs Archers to match the achievements of their English counterparts. The grounds, practise and target were very well defined. The range was 50 yards and the target was 48 cm in diameter, possibly meant to represent the chest of a man. The bull was 14.5 cm in diameter with an inner bull of 4.2 cm. My conclusion is that if a medieval war bow archer could hit a man in the face at 20 yards and the chest at 50, he could, at 100 yards, seriously discomfort an individual.

The potential accuracy of the crossbow was impressive. In a shooting competition held in Bavaria in 1467 the target was 12 inches in diameter, the distance 260 feet. In another competition the target was less than half of that but probably at a shorter distance, some targets were placed at about 30 yards, when the normal distance for competitions was between 80 and 100 yards. This would suggest that the crossbow was rather more accurate than the war bow in the hands of a capable arbalastier. Both were far more accurate than any contemporary firearm.

The soundness of this theory of a range of forty-five bow-lengths has been established and its superiority and excellence have been proven. Its advocates do not permit shooting beyond that distance. As a matter of fact, it is less than half the limit of possible effective range, although, according to experts, no accuracy is sure beyond it.

Those who have permitted shooting the limit of possible effectiveness, which is three hundred cubits, have done so on the assumption that strong and heavy bows are capable of casting arrows straight for that distance—without rising high or dropping low—especially when the archers who wield them follow the method of not raising the hand for a distant target nor dropping it for a near one, but rectify any error in shooting—whether on the excessive side or on the short side—by projecting the lower siyah of the bow to the left if they desire an increase of cast, or by bringing it in toward the side if they desire a decrease. But those who follow the method of raising the hand in order to counteract, or compensate for, any possibility of the arrow's falling short of the mark, or of dropping the hand to avoid its going beyond, hold that aiming along the arm and locked fingers is just as good as aiming along the arrowhead and is unaffected by dropping the sight. One flaw, however, appears in the method; namely, that the arrow falls on the target obliquely from above and rests thereon as though it were dangling. This is unacceptable in tournaments.
