It may well be that the reduction of the sprawling early Ghaznavid empire to a more manageable size was a source of strength rather than of weakness; the sultanate survived in Ghazna for some 120 years after the cataclysm of Dandanqan, and in the Panjab for 20 years further.

And, well before Dandanqan, the Ghaznavid vision was fixed on new conquests and new lands in Afghanistan and India, which is where the real significance of that dynasty resides.

Maudud died when about to lead a revanche against the Seljuqs in Khurasan.

Thus God protected Da'ud [Chaghri Beg] from the hostile intentions of Mawdud.

According to lbn Baba, he was struck down by an internal disorder (qulanj) shortly after leaving Ghazna; he had only time to despatch the vizier  'Abd ar-Razzaq to Sistan in order to avert a threat there before he died.

When Mawdud died and Abd aI-Rashid became ruler, he maintained the high position of Tughril unchanged, and made him chief chamberlain. Tughril advised him to attack the Oghuz and to expel them from Khurasan, but he hesitated, feeling that to be a far-fetched plan. ... Abu'l-Fadl wrote to Payghu to inform him of what Tughril was doing, so Payghu marched  to Sijistan to deny it to Tughril. ... Battle was joined and Tughril routed them and seized their possessions. Then he turned to the other group and dealt with them in the same way. Payghu and Abu'l-Fadl made for Herat. Tughril pursued them for about two leagues ... In the Indian provinces there was an emir, called Khirkhiz, who commanded a large army. After Tughril had killed  Abd aI-Rashid and taken charge of affairs, he wrote to him and invited him to cooperate and help him to recover the provinces from the hands of the Oghuz.

When the lord of Khurasan, Da'ud the brother of Tughril Beg, heard that Abd  aI-Rashid had been killed, he gathered his forces and went to Ghazna. Khirkhiz marched out to resist him, and in battle Da'ud was defeated and all he had with him was taken as booty.

When Farrukh-Zad was firmly established and his hold on power was solid, he despatched a large army to Khurasan, which was met by Kul-Sarigh, one of the great emirs. He fought them stubbornly but was defeated and abandoned by his men. He and along with him many of the army in Khurasan and their chiefs and commanders were taken prisoner. Alp Arslan assembled a large force, and his father, Da'ud, sent him with that force against the army that had taken Kul-Sarigh prisoner. He defeated them in battle and  took several of their notables into captivity. Thereupon Farrukh-Zad freed his prisoners and gave robes of honour to Kul-Sarigh when he freed him.

The success of these Turkish dynasties at establishing their dominion over most of the dar al-Islam west of Africa must perhaps, like that of the Arabs in the 7th century, be attributed to serendipity. Existing states such as the Samanids and the Buyids were beset by internal political weaknesses, while the rise of the Fatimids legitimised the emergence of powerful dynasties that explicitly identified themselves as Sunni, although the Seljuqs acted more as the Abbasid caliphs’ captors than liberators after their conquest of Baghdad in 1055. Even in the Sunni world of the 11th century, Abbasid authority would not be restored, although with the decline of the Seljuqs in the late 12th century, Caliph al-Nasir li-Din Allah managed briefly to re-establish a limited caliphal government in Iraq, before this attempt too was destroyed by the Mongol invasion and conquest of Baghdad in 1258. The survival of the Abbasid Caliphate long after it had lost any effective power can be attributed to its utility in legitimising the upstart Sunni dynasties of the 10th to 12th centuries through the award of titles and insignia of rulership.

In these respects, they differed fundamentally from the Ghaznavids, whose Turkish ancestry was much less decisive in influencing their political structures, which were largely inherited from the Samanids.

(Juergen Paul. The State and the Military: The Samanid Case. 1994).

Like all the other states in the area, the Uqaylids were challenged by the arrival of the Ghuzz Turks. At first things went badly for the Uqaylids, and in 433/1041f. the Turks took Mosul. However, the newcomers were in direct competition for pasture with both Kurds and Arabs, and Qirwash was able to put together a coalition which inflicted a major defeat on the Turksin Ramad an 435/April 1044, a victory which effectively ensured that the plains of northern Iraq should remain in Arab, rather than Turkish, hands. Qirwash’s most important successor, Muslim ibn Quraysh (453 78/1061 85), was able to maintain his independence for a while by playing off Fatimids and Saljuqs, but after his death in battle the Saljuqs gradually asserted their authority, and in 486/1093 the city was taken by Tutush ibn Alp Arslan.

Ahmad ibn Muhammad (ibn) Nasr says Muhammad ibn Ja‘far al-Narshakhi did not mention this chapter in this order but mentioned some of it in the middle of his account. Abu'- Hasan Nishapiri in “The Treasury of the Sciences,” however, mentioned it in this order. When the caliphate passed to the Amir of the Faithful Mahdi, (158-169/775-785) the father of Harun al-Rashid, and none of the ‘Abbasid caliphs was more pious than he, he gave the governorship of all of Khurasan to Abu'-‘Abbas al-Fadl ibn Sulaiman Tusi in the year 166/782 or 3. The latter went to Merv and resided there.

Then the chiefs, lords, and nobles of Bukhara went to him. All of the nobles of Sughd also went to Merv to hail the new governor of Khurasan. He inquired into the condition of their district. The people of Bukhara said, “We suffer from the infidel Turks who continually come without warning and plunder the villages. Now they recently came and plundered the village of Samdiin and carried off Muslims into captivity.”

Abu'l-‘Abbas Tusi said, “Is there anything you recommend I do?” Yazid ibn Ghirak, king of Sughd, was there and said, “Long live the amir of Khurasan! In olden times, in the Time of Ignorance, the Turks used to plunder the district of Sughd. A woman was ruler in SughdShe constructed walls around Sughd and the district obtained respite from the Turks.”

Abu’l-Abbas Tasi ordered Muhtadi ibn Hamad ibn ‘Amr al-Dhahli, who was his amir of Bukhara, to build walls for Bukhara so that all of the villages of Bukhara would be inside those walls, similar to Samarqand, so the Turks could not enter the district of Bukhara

Muhtadi ibn Hamad ordered the wall built, and a gate constructed at every parasang, and every half mile a strong fort. Sa‘d ibn Khalaf al-Bukhari [God show him mercy], who was a judge in Bukhara, superintended this work till the time of Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn ‘Abdallah ibn Mansir ibn Haljad ibn Warraq. It was completed in the year 215/830. Every succeeding amir ordered more construction and took care of it. This represented a great trouble and expense to the people of Bukhara, for every year much money and a large labor force were necessary. So it was till the time of the amir Isma‘l Samani, whot freed the people of this burden. The wall fell into ruins. He said, “While I live, I am the wall of the district of Bukhara.” That which he claimed he performed. He constantly fought in person and did not allow the foe victory in the province of Bukhara.

Not long afterwards the Turks began to convert in significant numbers to Islam. One perhaps unintended consequence of this was that the Samanid homeland began to be flooded with Turkish slaves and converts, fuelling the rise of Turks as slave soldiers in the armies of the Samanids and others and rather dramatically changing the demographics and then the politics of the Islamic east.

D.G. Tor. The Political Revival of the Abbasid Caliphate: Al-Muqtafi and the Seljuqs // Journal of the American Oriental Society 137.2 (2017)

There are several conclusions to be drawn from the events of al-Muqtafī’s reign. First, one of the more noteworthy aspects of his military campaigns for caliphal independence — which seems not to have been remarked upon previously — is that the caliph achieved his military successes almost entirely without the aid of Turkish mamluks; the sources state explicitly that all of his slave soldiery (as opposed to his free soldiery, which included Turkmens as well as every other Muslim ethnic group) was recruited from Byzantium and Armenia — and these mamluks apparently maintained their position quite well against the various Seljuq and atabeg armies, which consisted largely of Turks, both Turkmens and mamluks:

When the imam was made caliph, it was upon the condition that he would not purchase any Turkish mamluk; and throughout the entire length of his caliphate he purchased only Armenian or Byzantine [ones], and he did not have any [slave] Turks, with the sole exception of Turshak, whom he had owned before [his elevation to] the imamate.

Ironically, this passage, which has been held up as proof of Turkish mamluk superiority, proves the contrary, since al-Muqtafī’s virtually Turkish-mamluk-free armies repeatedly beat the Turkish (supposedly mamluk-filled) ones in open combat. Even after freeing himself from Seljuq domination, when he enjoyed complete freedom of action, al-Muqtafī continued to avoid purchasing Turkish mamluks, according to this passage.

For the first hundred years or so of Abbāsid rule, before the enrollment of large numbers of slave soldiery in the Abbāsid military, no Abbāsid caliph was ever murdered by his free soldiers or generals; only, on rare occasions, by other family members. Within a generation of the massive influx of the slave soldiery into the Abbāsid armies, in contrast, these ghilmān had taken over the state, murdered five successive caliphs, and irreparably destroyed Abbāsid political power. In other words, ironically, loyalty suddenly became very much an issue only with the large-scale infusion of slave-soldiers into the military.

...

Thus, for instance, the Daylamite ruler Mardāvīj b. Ziyār, whose military mainstay consisted of his free countrymen, was nevertheless murdered by his Turkish ghilmān. Similarly, the Sāmānids never experienced murderous trouble from the dihqān class or other free warriors; amīrs seem to have been murdered only by their slave soldiers, the most notable victim being Aḥmad b. Ismāʻīl, slaughtered by his own ghilmān in the year 301/914.

Much also has been made in this context of the supposedly anomalous servile personal status of slave-soldiers, and it has been assumed that this status and original dislocation produced a different kind of warrior than did, say, the system of knighthood and fealty in England and France during the same period (the eleventh and twelfth centuries); but Orientalists have overlooked the fact that the preponderance of German knighthood at this time was also composed of unfree knights, the ministeriales, who constituted an elaborate elite-service slave system notably similar to that of the ghilmān.

Indeed, the parallels between the mamlūk palace corps in particular and the non-servile household retainer system in, for example, England is striking.

Note that the Old English “cniht” (“knight”) originally, as with the term ghulām, meant merely “boy” or “attendant”, and then developed its secondary meaning of “retainer”; and could, as with the term ghulām, be used interchangeably in any of these senses: it “sometimes betokens a young knight or retainer, and sometimes a household servant.” CROUCH, 2011: 7.

At least on the score of loyalty, the evidence suggests that having entered a lord's service as his slave was no guarantee of a man's fidelity, any more than the oath of fealty was in the West; the Seljuqs' amirs, both slave and free, appear to have given much the same sort of trouble to their respective lords as Western barons did to theirs. Nor should this fact surprise us: Servants and slaves may be easier to dominate and control than free men, but only until they have been given so much power that their servile status becomes purely nominal.

The author is indebted to Patricia Crone for this last point, and for noting the parallel between the harem-master and mamlūk-master relationships.

... note also GREEN, 1997: 221: “Military power has too often been described in terms of obligations owed to kings in the form of quotas of knight service, whereas in reality the political history of the Anglo-Norman period was characterized by  frequent rebellions where the military muscle of the aristocracy was turned against the king.”

Whereas both slave and free warriors were perfectly willing to die in battle for love of their lord, it is the ghilmān who, in their competitive jealousy, behave very much like co-wives, piqued rivals jockeying for their master's affections, ready to sit out battles and pout if a rival was perceived as being more favored. This emotional atmosphere is indeed quite different, not only from that found in medieval Europe, but also from that found among free Muslim warriors. This difference in the quality of the emotional tie between man and master among slaves on the one hand and free men on the other finds clear expression in literature: Whereas the ideal of service and love for one's lord as it relates to medieval Islamic free warriors is found in courtly romances such as Samak-e ʿAyyār or the Iskandar-nāmah, and the comparable European ideal in chansons de geste such as the Song of Roland, the literary expression of the relationship between Islamic master and ghulām is celebrated in love poetry, particularly erotic poetry featuring the young ghulām cup-bearer or sāqī.

When Amir Mahmūd drew near to Ganda, he drew up his army in battle formation, and set out the right and left, the centre, the two wings, the vanguard and the rearguard, and he sent out scouts.

Then he ordered the army to be deployed in its formations, each with its right, left, centre and two wings, and with an armoury (zarrād-khāna) held behind each formation, and the elephants were stationed with their protective armour and saddles.

The latter was drawn up in battle lines, with the right and left, the centre and the wings, properly deployed, and battle was joined.

When the Martyr Amir saw the situation, he gave orders that the troops should get ready for battle. The army took up its battle formation and the troops formed up into unbroken lines (s.aff-hā). The Turkmens also set about preparing for battle and followed their usual practice in forming up for battle, since they fight in separate compact groups (kurdūs kurdūs), and they all deployed themselves thus.

When this news reached Amir Khalaf in Sistan, he designated the ghulāms formerly of the following of Bāytūz and the free troops, amounting to 4,000 cavalrymen, plus four elephants, to attack Amir Abū ‛Alī. The latter had [only] 1,000 cavalrymen. Battle was joined and large numbers of persons killed, and those four elephants were captured.

After these events, the Ilig sent agents to all parts of Transoxania and sought to assemble an army, and he ended up with a force of 40,000 cavalrymen. With that army he crossed the Oxus and reached Balkh. Amir Mahmūd marched thither and the armies clashed on the plain of Katar. When the armies formed up in their battle lines, Amir Mahmūd performed two rak‛ats of the worship and prayed to God, He is Magnifi ed and Exalted, for victory. Then he turned his attention to the battle. He gave orders that all the elephants should be enraged and sent forward in an attack. The Turks were immediately defeated, and Amir Mahmūd’s army killed large numbers of them and took many captives. Those who fl ed were drowned in the Oxus, and their horses and weapons seized as booty. This victory took place on Sunday, 22 Rabī‛ II of the year 398 [/5 January 1008].

News reached Amir Yamīn al-Dawla that there were two valleys, one called the Qīrāt and the other the Nūr, and these were highly defensible and the people there infi dels and idol worshippers. Yamīn al-Dawla led an expedition against these valleys with his army, and he gave orders that numerous squads of artisans, including blacksmiths, carpenters and stonehewers, should accompany the troops, hack out roads, cut down trees and break up rocks.

When he reached the fortress of Gwalior, he invested it and besieged it. He ordered his troops to occupy all the surrounding territory, but since that fortress was so well fortified and impregnable, and was situated upon a rock of hard stone, sappers and miners and operators of ballistas were useless against it, and it was not possible to take it.

In the year 425 [/1034], he led an expedition to Āmul and Sārī. He mobilised his troops and proceeded there with a well-armed and fully equipped army. News of his approach had reached those lands, and all the people there had got ready for war. A large army of town-dwellers, mountain folk, Jīlīs and Daylamīs had been assembled and had taken up a position on the road, with detachments placed at intervals in ambushes in the thick forests and narrow places. When the Ghaznavid army arrived there, the enemy poured forth from very direction and were engaging in fighting.

Mu‘awiya’s death in 680 unleashed a new civil war, as candidates from other branches of the Quraysh attempted to win the caliphate. The two most important challengers were ‘Abd Allah Ibn al-Zubayr, the son of one of Muhammad’s companions, and Husayn, the son of ‘Ali b. Abu Talib. The dynasty was rescued by Marwan, a member of a different Umayyad lineage, whose descendants held the caliphate to the end of the dynasty. Marwan had first to rise within the Umayyad camp, and then to win over the Syrian army, a significant part of which favored Ibn al-Zubayr, particularly the tribes centered in the Jazira and northern Syria. Marwan achieved success with the help of the Kalb and several tribes of more local power in Syria.

Even the Kalb, who had intermarried with the Umayyad house, had to be won over, and they were powerful enough to impose conditions for their support. The terms proposed by the tribe’s leader, Ibn Bahdal, provide a telling illustration of the position of Bedouins and their shaykhs in the early Umayyad period. Ibn Bahdal demanded that he continue to hold same high position he had under Mu‘awiya and his son Yazid: 2,000 Kalb would get yearly pay of 2,000 dirhams, which was the highest stipend for non-Quraysh aristocracy, and Ibn Bahdal would have unrestricted control, presumably over the people and territory of his tribe. He also wanted assurance that he would have leadership of the tribal council and that after his death either his son or his cousin would lead the Kalb. These are large demands and show the centrality of the Kalb position, but they also suggest the dependence of the tribe on the state. There is an assumption here that the caliph had the power to appoint the tribal leader, and that the caliph, not the tribes themselves, determined the membership of the tribal council. The Kalb held significant power within the state, but their tribe was not a totally self-governing entity.
