A Muslim manual of war, being Tafrij al-karūb fī tadbīr al-hurub. Edited and translated by George T. Scanlon. 1961.

Umar Ibn Ibrahim al-Awsi Al-Ansari, also known as Ibn al-'Adim, was a scholar and a civil servant in Egypt in the late fourteenth and earlu fifteenth centuriesBefore he died in 1408, he composed a manual on the art of warfare, called the Tafrij al-Kurun fi Tadbir al-Hurub.  This work is divided up into twenty books, which deal with various topics, such as the qualities of generals and troops, the use of deception to avoid war, precautions to be taken when marching and setting up camp, and how to conduct and defend against sieges.

Shihad al-Sarraf. Mamluk Furusiyah Literature and its Antecedents

The main pre-Mamluk source remained the abridged version of al-Harthami's work, though almost never acknowledged. It was quoted by al-Aqsarai, Ibn Mangli, and especially ‘Umar Ibn Ibrahim al-Awsi al-Ansari, who included almost the entire text verbatim in his Tafrij al-Kurub fi Tadbir al-Hurub, written for Sultan al-Nasir Faraj ibn Barquq (801–8/1399–1407). On the whole, notwithstanding strong dependence on pre-Mamluk sources, Ibn Mangli's treatises constitute a worthy contribution.

If the soldiers take the initiative in marching out against the enemy, their march should be from a high place, elevated above the ground so that the army will be higher than the enemy. Their going forth should  be steady and cautious and slow. There should be in front of the cavalry those of the infantry who will defend it and protect it from the infantry of the enemy. When the infantry of the army have put the enemy’s infantry to flight, it may happen that the cavalry of the army will follow upon them in the work of routing. If the infantry of the enemy is routed, and falls back upon their cavalry, it causes their horses to panic and their pursuit by the infantry of the army might be continued. This will be the cause of the break-up of the enemy and his rout.

If the center is required to march out against the enemy, its men should proceed slowly, little by little, without rushing or haste. If haste in movement towards the enemy occurs, perhaps those behind  the [center’s] ranking will think that they have arrived at the enemy’s [position] and that they will be [engaged] with him. They will become disturbed because of this and will be affected by it.

If a troop of men attack the enemy and then are required to retire to their [original] station, they should avoid anything unseemly or hurried in their retreat, for such would indicate fear and anxiety. Rather their retreat should be the most ordered and steadiest of retreats. The unseemliness of their retreat could enhance the covetousness of the enemy towards [the army]. He will pursue it, and rout will ensue.

If the men who attacked the enemy were those of the center in their totality and they are compelled to retreat, they should retreat to a place behind their backs, swerving and looking sideways, some inclining shoulders and heads, and [with] chests in the direction of the chests of  the enemy. They should not cease doing this until they reach their [original] positions. While doing this, they [must] display power [by] calling for victory, exhorting steadiness and conquest, so that their  companions hear [this call]. This gives notice of the presence of the center and of its power in such cases where the hearts grow faint. If one of the men of the center attacks and takes advantage of an opportunity against the enemy (i.e., for individual combat) and then has to retirehe should incline leftwards and towards the left flank or towards what is between the wings of the center and left flank

If those who attack are men of the right flank, they should retire, [if forced to], by walking backwards to their [original] positions. Should one of the men of the right flank attack and take advantage of an opportunity [against] the enemy and [then] wishes to retire, he should incline leftwards towards the center or towards what is between the center wing and right flank. This latter method is easier in retreating than retiring towards the left flank and its vicinity would be.

If all of the left flank attacks, they should retire [by] moving backwards to their positions, as has been noted for the right flank. And if one of the left flank attacks, then retires, he should incline [in retreating towards] the left. If the warrior of the left flank, after the attack, moves towards the area of the center, it [will be] easier for him than [a motion] towards the right flank

And among that which attentiveness demands is the knowledge that the return of the horseman after the engagement to his station, from which he sallied forth, is most salutary, if it be possible; so that he will be in the position established for him, [making him easier to find later on] . If it isn’t possible, he should stand in its vicinity. There should be no altercation about this, because the object is simply that he remain in his [proper] ranking and not [necessarily] in that particular place.

It is required of the warrior [charging] against the enemy that he does not exhaust himself in rushing his horse and that he does not pursue his adversary beyond a third of the distance between him and the enemy. Thus there would be between him and the army a third of the distance, and between him and the enemy two-thirds. To go beyond this is heedlessness.

For the heedless, no praise
E’en though he come through safe .”

[Though] the enemy be put to rout before him, the attacker should not feel secure, because this [rout] might be like a stratagem such as [to enable] the springing of an ambush and the like; unless, of course, the failure of the enemy and his defeat are apparent. In the latter case pursuing the enemy is necessary, but the warrior should not hasten to thrust [too] deeply into the army of the enemy, even if the latter’s failure is apparent and his horses are delayed [in retreat], until the men of bravery and patience from his own army join him and the battle-cavalry have come together once more.

If the enemy simulates flight and raises dust, the attack against him should not occur until this dust has settled, for fear of an ambushIf the enemy turns his back and his rout is certain, the entire army should not follow him, rather some of the army should pursue him while others plunder, and the remainder are employed to cover these operations. For the army, as a whole, to pursue [the enemy] is judged blameworthy.

Should the enemy remain standing after his [apparent] defeat, the standard bearer (or flag commander), sahib al-liwa’, should advance a little distance, while the cavalry, who are chosen and prepared for  that [eventuality], attacks. In this circumstance, it is incumbent upon the army to make every effort to surround them from every side. The commander of the army should set out [towards the enemy] with the  largest standard, al-band al-a‘zam, and all of the cavalry should surround and protect him. Verily, in all this there is dread and fright brought upon the enemy, especially if they have [already] tasted the edge of iron. When the enemy dallies at this point, it is the onset of victory, God willing.

If a combatant from the army rides out for single combat , his position should be at a point one third of the distance between his comrades and the enemy. Should the latter simulate flight, he [can proceed] to two-thirds of the distance, but he must not go beyond that. Indeed some have said that he should not exceed a third of the distance between his comrades and the enemy under any circumstances.

Столкнулся с тем, что "The Cambridge History of Iran. Volume 4. From the Arab Invasion to the Saljuqs" читать просто не могу.

А в "The Cambridge History of Iran" Буидам отведено 55 страниц ВСЕГО. В "The Cambridge History of Iran" Саффаридам вместе с Тахиридами уделено 46 страниц.

In Dhu’l-Qa ‘da of this year (began 23rd August, 1134), reports reached Shams al-Mulūk from the quarter of the Franks of their determination to break the terms of the armistice and denounce the friendly relations established between them, and of their preparations for assembling their forces and raiding and ravaging the provinces of Damascus.  On receiving news of this Shams al-Mulūk began gathering his men-at-arms and summoned to his aid the Turkmens from all the provinces.  Word was brought to him that the Franks had set out in the direction of Hawrān, whereupon he moved out with the ‘askar and proceeding towards them, encamped over against them.  The Franks set about devastating the principal cultivated estates of Hawrān, and some skirmishing took place between the two forces. Now the Franks had a host of horse and foot so vast that they besieged the Muslims in their camp, and neither horseman nor footsoldier could venture forth without being riddled with arrows and snatched to his death. This archery duel between the two sides had continued for some days, when Shams al-Mulūk threw them off their guard and marched out, unperceived by them, with a considerable body of the ‘askar.  Making for their towns of ‘Akkā, Nazareth, and Tiberias and their environs, he seized an uncountable quantity of cattle, beasts of burden, women, children, and men, killing all whom he encountered, enslaving all who were in his path, burning everything that he found, and the hands of the Turkmens were filled with their booty. When the news of this reached the Franks, they were dismayed and disquieted, and they at once withdrew in disorder from their camp, making for their own territories. Shams al-Mulūk, learning of this, withdrew to his camp by way of al-Sha ‘rā,1 himself and all his force unharmed, victorious and booty-laden.  When the Franks reached their districts and saw what had happened to them and the disaster that had befallen their people, they were grieved, dispirited and disheartened, their unity was dissolved, and they were humbled and besought [Shams al-Mulūk for] the establishment of peace between them.  Shams al-Mulūk retumed joyfully to Damascus at the end of Dhu’l-Hijja of this year (middle of October).

On Wednesday, 9th First Jumādā (19th June), the pigeons arrived with letters from the camp of Nūr al-Dīn conveying information that al-Malik al-'Adil Nūr al-Dīn, learning that the camp of the Frankish infidels was at al-Mallāha, between Tiberias and Banyas, set out with his victorious ‘askar of Turks and Arabs and marched with all speed. When he was almost upon them and they, taken by surprise, saw his standards overshadowing them, they made speed to don their armour and to mount, and dividing into four detachments they charged upon the Muslims.  Thereupon the king Nūr al-Dīn dismounted and his stout warriors dismounted with him, and they smote them with arrows and spears, so that in less time than it takes to tell it, their feet slipped with them and death and destruction overwhelmed them.  God, the Mighty, the Omnipotent, sent down His aid upon His faithful followers and His abandonment upon the stiff-necked infidels ; we overpowered their horsemen with slaughter and captivity, and the swords extirpated their footsoldiers. They were a great number and a vast assembly, but none of them escaped, according to the report of a reliable informant, save ten men whom destiny hadrespited and to whose hearts fear had lent wings. It was said that their king (God curse them) was amongst them, and it was said that he was one of the slain, but no information was obtained concerning him, though a vigorous search was made for him. Of the ‘askar of Islam there were lost none but two men, one of whom was a noted warrior, who had slain four of the infidel braves, and was himself slain at the arrival of his destined hour, the other an unknown stranger. Each of them passed away a martyr, rewarded and recompensed (God’s mercy upon them). The hands of the ‘askaris were filled with an innumerable quantity of the horses, equipment, beasts, and baggage fumiture of the Franks, and their church with its famous apparatus came into the hands of the king Nur al-Din. This was a mighty conquest and manifest aid from God, the Powerful, the Giver of victory— may God increase thereby the might of Islām and abase polytheism and its faction.

David Nicolle (1994): The reality of Mamluk warfare: Weapons, armour and tactics, Al-Masaq: Islam and the Medieval Mediterranean, 7:1, 77-110

The Nihayat al-Su'l wa I-Umniyya fi Acmäl al-Furusiyya, "The Complete Instructions in the Practices of the Military Art", is one of the best known works of furasiyya from the Mamluk period. This study and translation is based on an unpublished annotated edition by A.S.M. Lutful-Huq. Yet there is still debate about the authorship of the original text.

Much of the Nihaynt al-Su'l was a compilation of earlier works on military tactics, organization and training, some perhaps dating back to Hellenistic Greece. Other parts of the work were, however, clearly written during the early eighth/fourteenth century Mamluk period, as shown by references to warfare against Mongol invaders along the Euphrates frontier.

- Where should a lance be put if one wants to use the bow or other weapon?

- Whether the lance is heavy or hollow (of the light form) or of knotted cane, then, according to the experts, it should be hung from the belt or put on this right hand into its strap which is the usage of the Tatars of the east (Mongols). Always ensure that the lance is put in the same place, so that the lancers can always remember that it is in its correct place, if God wills.

The horsemen of Persia and the Turks use this, and each of their horsemen carries one and considers it the highpoint of furusiyya skills. They were also the first to use such a weapon in war, and to despise those whom they were able to catch with the lassoo.

- How is the lassoo thrown, and what should its length be?

- Its length should be twenty cubits (approximately 10 metres). Thread the end of the rope though a ring in the lassoo until one third is (passed) through. Now hold a further third in the hand, letting the final third hang free. Take the loop in the right hand with the gathered together third, holding the rest of the lassoo in the left hand. Now spin it around your head, and this is the same for the horseman, infantry or anyone else.

R. Stephen Humphreys. Mu‘awiya ibn Abi Sufyan. From Arabia to Empire. 2006

How did Mu‘awiya, alone among Muslim leaders, build such a coherent, effective power base? The answer is, simply, we do not know, though there are a few hints. It is clear that Mu‘awiya did not rely primarily on the armies which Abu Bakr and ‘Umar had used to conquer Syria, the command of which fell to him after 639. These forces were relatively small and even though they may have remained in Syria, they were never settled in large garrisons, like those in Iraq and Egypt. Some took up residence in the cities, particularly Damascus and Hims, while others were dispatched to the steppes, far from any towns. Many were assigned pasturelands along the Byzantine frontier and made up the bulk of the troops periodically mobilized for the summer campaigns in Anatolia and Armenia.

Mu‘awiya clearly preferred to rely on the tribes which had long resided on the Syrian steppes and who were reasonably familiar (though not always welcome) to the settled villagers and townspeople of Syria-Palestine. Among these, the Kalb in the south and the Tanukh in the north were the most important. These tribesmen formed the core of Mu‘awiya’s army in the struggles between 656 and 661. An early indication of this emerging policy was his marriage, sometime around 650, to Maysun, the daughter of the powerful chief of the Kalb, Bahdal ibn Unayf. His cousin, the caliph ‘Uthman, also married a Kalbi woman, Na’ila bint al-Farafisa, at about the same time, and the wife of his favourite general, Habib ibn Maslama, was also Kalbi. In view of Mu‘awiya’s relations with the Christians of Syria, which I shall discuss in the next chapter, it is important to note that both Na’ila and Maysun were Christian before they married. It is reasonable to surmise that these marriages reflected an Umayyad decision to seek a basis of political and military support outside the élite inner circle of Muhammad’s Companions, to whom they would always be personae non gratae. Both the Kalb and the Tanukh were largely Christian at the beginning of the conquest of Syria: during that struggle the Kalb followed a sensible policy of wait-and-see and stayed mostly on the sidelines; after the Muslim victory, most (though not all) of the tribe converted to Islam fairly quickly. In contrast, the Tanukh had fought with the Byzantines and many Tanukhis migrated to Anatolia after the Byzantine collapse. Those who remained accepted the new order but were in no rush to abandon Christianity.

Since they resided in the steppe and desert they required little bureaucratic oversight, but could rather be recruited and paid as needed. We know very little about military administration in Muqawiya’s Syria, but most likely it was done through subsidies to the tribal leaders rather than by centrally controlled stipends assigned to individual soldiers.

The experiences of the later Roman Empire between AD 395 and 410 show how a series of contingent events, which were for the most part political and military, as well as human decisions resulted in a fundamental change in the condition of the empire in the west to an extent that was not foreseeable in 395. A synergism of momentary decisions and contingent military events within fifteen years transformed a situation and its related institutional conditions. Something similar happened between 634 and 641 in Palestine, Syria, Egypt, and Mesopotamia.
